文摘TheMainIdeaThissectiontrainsthestudentstoskimthroughthetextforthemainideas).atthefirstreading.Setatimelimitforthisprocess.Forthistext,whichisapproximately590wordsinlength,aboutthreeminutesforthefirstreadingshouldbeenough.Butifthestudentsarenotusedtoskimming,perhapstheycouldbegivenfourorfiveminutestobeginwith.Thatshouldbeampletimetoskimthroughsuchashorttext.Thefollowingareguidelinesforskimming.1.Runtheeyesoverthetextrapidly,readonlythefamiliarwordsandphrasesandignoretheunfamiliarones.Trytopiecetogetherthebitsofinformationgatheredfromtherapidreadingsensiblysothatthemainideasis.e.grasped.2.Trytorecognizethekeywordsandphrases,i.e.,wordsandphrasesthatarecloselyrelatedtothetitleofthetext;andignorethesupportingdetails,i.e.,anythingthatdescribes.ains,ordevelopsthemainideas).3.Readonlythefirstandthelastsentenceofeachparagraph,for,asarule,thegistofapara-.graphisfoundthere.But,ofcourse,therearealwaysexceptions.4.Readthefirstparagraphandthelastparagraphofatextforthesamereasonas3.Themainideaofthistextis(3):Thewriterwasinterviewedbytheheadrnasterofaschoolandwasofferedajobthatwasnonetoopleasant.HereisanexampletoshowhowtohelpthestudentstoskimthroughMyFirstdob:Tellthestudentsthateveniftheyonlygooverthewordsandphrasesfamiliartothem,theyshouldbeabletoidentifythekeywordsandphrases.
