文摘More and more parents are found babysitting these days. Not friends' kids or even nieces or nephews. No! What they are watching are virtual pets (虚拟宠物). Those key chain size babies that need to eat and sleep and you know, every few minutes. Apparently parents cannot seem to say no when their children make unreasonable requests. This may be a good time to explain to your children what fads are. Businesses often exploit the way fads encourage children and parents to spend money or do something just because "everyone" is doing it.
I think that taking care of your child's virtual pet is even more ridiculous than the "pet"itself. I also think that parents, in spite of your complaints, must actually be enjoying this fad!Otherwise, you would figure out a way to deactivate the virtual pet during the hours the child could not be responsible to care for it. After all, it is, your child's pet, not yours. One reason we give children pets is to teach responsibility. I seriously doubt if any child is learning anything about responsibility of a baby, if morn watches it every time the child is busy.
Consider giving your child a chance to use his brain more creatively. Encourage him to use his imagination to create a unique "pet rock" from a smooth stone or rock. Give him paint, glue, pipe cleaners, scrap material or fur, buttons, or even a few feathers from a feather duster. His pet rock may mean more to him than a virtual pet, because he created it himself. He can even make several unusual pet rocks, and give them to others for Christmas.
Now it is actually the time to start planning for Christmas gifts that children can make for others. There is really no other way for them to understand that Christmas is the spirit of giving, not getting! Making gifts for others teaches children generosity, pride and responsibility.41. What does the underlined word "fads" in the first paragraph mean?
