On January 23, 2002, Danny Pearl, the South Asia bureau chief of theWall Street Journalstationed in Pakistan, left his Karachi home to go to some meetings. It was the last time his wife, fellow journalist Mariane, saw him alive. Abducted by people who identified themselves as Pakistani militants (others claimed they were Muslim terrorists linked to al-Qaeda) and who accused the reporter of working secretly for the CIA, Pearl was held prisoner and eventually murdered. This memoir, written by his widow, begins the morning of his abduction and takes us through the confirmation of his abduction, the efforts to free him, and his assassination. It's the story of Danny Pearl, a man who "gave his all to everything he did," a creative and ambitious reporter who knew all the risks and took them anyway--not because he was foolhardy, or even brave, but because it's what a journalist does. Plenty of words have been written about the Pearl abduction, but these are by far the most personal and most poignant.David Pitt

Most people were unfamiliar with Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl before his kidnapping and murder in Pakistan. InA Mighty Heart, his widow Mariane introduces us to Danny as he was when he was alive while also providing a heart-breaking first person account of his disappearance and death. There are plenty of endearing details about Danny--his insistence on moving his favorite Barcalounger with him around the world, his love of playing mandolin, his private conversations with his unborn son--but the more remarkable portrait that emerges is one of extraordinary bravery. Danny placed himself in post-9/11 Pakistan, realizing full well that region's inherent dangers, because of his courageous dedication to getting the truth about attempted shoe bomber Richard Reid and other terrorist activity. When he is kidnapped and pictures are e-mailed to his wife, she notices that he's slyly showing the peace or victory sign with one hand and flipping the kidnappers off with the other. And while clues to his fate are still being pieced together, Mariane's story, until now, has not been widely told. Realizing Danny has been abducted, she must navigate underworld politics, the international spotlight, and her own shattered nerves in a race against time to save her husband. Along the way, with the broad array of people and agencies assisting the cause, clues are gathered about the kidnappers' identity and the intricate machinations of the international terrorist community. When his fate is finally learned, the spotlight does not abate even as she is devastated and awaiting the couple's first child. Mariane Pearl's candor is remarkable and her courage, along with that of her late husband, serve to makeA Mighty Heart, despite Danny Pearl's death, an uplifting story.--John Moe--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
专业书评From Publishers Weekly
Documentary film director and former French public radio and television journalist Pearl tenderly recounts the heartbreaking story behind the 2002 kidnapping and barbaric videotaped execution of her husband, Wall Street journalist Daniel Pearl, in this candid and inspirational audio recording. There's no mistaking the steel beneath Mariane's lilting French accent as she explains why she wrote this book-to defy her husband's killers-and how she distrusted Karachi, a decadent city where anti-American and anti-Semitic sentiments abound, from the start. Her telling of her husband's abduction and the frantic attempts to save him is dramatic and disturbing, but she tempers it with choice memories of her and Danny's first meeting, courtship, marriage and excitement over their impending baby. Details about the historical, social and political background of the Middle East help illuminate the area and its inhabitants, but ultimately, this is a loving, illuminating and movingly recounted tale of love and courage.

The wife of murdered journalist Daniel Pearl recounts his kidnapping in early 2002 and the attempt to find him. This book briefly discuses Pearl's life, but mostly we learn about his time in Pakistan shortly before his kidnapping and the efforts by his wife and others to rescue him from terrorists. It's a dramatic story, made more so by the fact that it's true. Mariane Pearle's French accent is strong, and at times she is not perfectly clear. Her emotion, however, is strongly and clearly communicated.
