文摘The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County In compliance with the request ofa friend ofmine．who wrote me fromthe East，I called on good．natured。garrulous old Simon Wheeler andinquired after my friend'S Mend，Leonidas W.Smiley,as requested to do．and I hereunto append the result．I have a lurking suspicion that Leonidas W．Smiley is a myth；that my friend never knew such a personage；and that heonly conjec tured thatifI askedold Wheeler about him,itwould remindhim of his infamous Jim Smiley,and he would go to work and bore me todeath with some exasperating reminiscence of him as long and as tediousas it should be useless to me．If t11at was the design．it succeeded．
I found Simon feeler dozing comfortably by the barroom stove ofthe dilapidated tavern in the decayed mining camp of Angel'S，and In oticed that he was fat and baldheaded．and had an expression of winning gentleness and simplicity upon his tranquil countenance．He mused up．and gave me good day．I told him that a friend of mine had commissionedme to make some inauiries about a cherished companion 0f his boy hoodnamed Leonidas W Smile-Rey．Leonidas W.Smiley,a young minister.of the Gospel. who he had heard Was at one time a resident of Angel'SCamp．I added that if Mr．Wheeler conld teII me anything about this Rev．Leonidas W.Smiley,1 would feel under many obhgafions to him．
Simoneler backed-me into a comer and blockaded me there withhis chair,and then sat down and reeled off the monotonous narrativewhich follows this paragraph．He never smiled，he never frowned，henever changed his voice from the genre-flowing kev to which he tuned hismitial sentence，he never betrayed the slightest suspicion of enthusiasm；but all through the interminable narrative there ran a vein of impressiveeamesmess and sinceritY,which showed me plainly that，so far from hisimagining that there was anything ridiculous or funny about his story,heregarded it as a really important maRe~and admired its two heroes as me
