本教材按《高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲》（2000年4月版）对大学一、二年级学生的听力方面应达到的标准要求而编写的，共分二册，大学英语专业一、二年级学生使用，也适应水平相当的学员作为教材或自学使用。每册教材分《学生用书》和《教师用书》两种，互为补充。

本书特色如下：

（一）以学生为中心，提供多种听力类型的范例，博采众长，内容丰富。既提供非常随意的、真正接近实际生活的听力教材，又提供一些语音清晰、内容多样、形式多样、形式活沷的讲座、报告和名人讲演。

（2）精心构思，循序渐进。每均提供会话、短文及录自BBC、VOA和CNN等广播新闻网的新闻报导。会话及短文的部分资料和新闻的全部有声资料为口语的实况录音（英语和美音二种），并非先写文稿再录音制作而成，故能把使用者引入真情实境聆听英语的世界。

（3）大量的听力、听写和笔录技巧蕴于多样的练习方式之中。通过广泛的练习，学生能够提高听力理解能力笔录技能，逐步掌握听力和笔录的技巧，从而能够在英语世界中进行流畅自如的交流。
