4.5.1 Passage 1
Swimming was one of the important living skills in ancient times. Prehistoric human beings had to learn to swim in order to cross rivers and lakes. For people today, swimming is usually just for fun and is practiced in the sea or in swimming pools.
Modem competitive swimming began in the nineteenth century. The oldest swimming organization was founded in London in 1869. It later became known as the Amateur Swimming Association. In 1908 the Federation International was founded. Swimming became a men's Olympic sport in 1896 in Athens and for women in 1912 in Stockholm.
4.5.2 Passage 2
Every decade or so, an extraordinary musician will appear and capture the heart of America. Western country singer and songwriter John Denver was, without a doubt, one of these rare individuals. He once said, "I can't remember not singing. Evidently from the time I could first talk, I started singing the songs that 1 heard on the radio. My friends called me 'jitterbug', because that was the name of the popular music being played at that time. And my grandmother gave me her guitar when I was 12 years old; it was her guitar that she had played when she was young."
4.5.3 Passage 3
Badminton is a game for 2 or 4 players using lightweight rackets and a shuttlecock. The cork ball is fitted with feathers. Players hit the shuttlecock back and forth over a net, trying to keep it from hitting the ground.
Great techniques and physical fitness alone are not enough to win a badminton game, a successful player must play smart. Here are some important points to being a successful player: Using quick thinking to adapt his or her play to the opponents' tactics and weaknesses; Using varying speed and position and deceptive plays to earn an edge over the opponent.
