Before 1800 ,many people spent one day a week at church. this was called a "holy day” in England. On that day, people rested and prayed.
In the early 1800s, Sunday was the "holy day”. But many workers played games and had fun on that day.And them they did not go to work on Monday mornings because they felt too tired. In the US, workers called them "blue Mondays”.
To solve the problem of"blue Monday”, in 1874, Saturday afternoon became a holiday in ENgland. At one o’clock everyone stopped working. This was the beginning of the weekend idea in England. By 1930, most American offices were closed on Saturday afternoons. By1940, offices in the US were closed all day on Saturday, and the two-day weekend began.
