If I remember correctly DCFX Desert Combat Final Extended remedied this. Wait, I think they just rolled them back to the original missiles and gave homing air to ground rockets, a la the hellfires, to the chopper pilots. Man those Apache hellfires were sweet. They'd do some wacky stuff though.

If you learn DC stingers you will quickly come to realize how much time you wasted in BF2 "waiting for lock". DC was about the gameplay.. are homing missiles more realistic nowadays? Yep.. are they fun implemented into a game? Nope.
I liken it to playing against Bots.. sure its easy but is it fun? The stinger takes a while to learn but when you have it down you can get some great shots. They will be due to your own effort, not a random decision by the code as to whether your missile should hit or not.
