Introduction to “The ABCs of Life”
“The ABCs of Life” is a micro-novel. Looking at its length, it is shorter than a mini-novel, with a narrower subject matter. It takes a small chapter from life to reflect on the human condition; it is a microcosm of society, with deep, inspirational allegories. Based on the three protagonists’ contrasting personalities, this micro-novel takes the reader down three entirely different paths. The novel encourages readers to face life’s challenges head on with a calm mentality, in order to truly succeed in life.
The ABCs of Life
The story begins on a summer afternoon in a coastal city in the North-East. A class of graduates celebrate their school reunion, and were happily chatting about their careers.
Mr A is a well-known small business owner in the local area. After a few years of entrepreneurship, he established quite a few assets, and became what was a classic “rich person”.
Mr B was the opposite, he entered the second-hand housing market with his limited capital. He had recently acquired a mortgage to buy a new residential suite. He is what you would call a “home boss” in this new age, as he is in charge of his own operations. He lives a good life.
Mr C quietly sat in the corner, alone and without words. “Hey C, how did you do in the last couple of years?” “Me? I..I don’t have as much money as A, I didn’t want to give up so much; I don’t have B’s courage, I’m afraid of not being able to pay off the bank…”
A few years later, because of an over-investment, Mr A lost a lot of capital, and he had to start down-sizing his company. Mr B rode on the back of the property boom and made some big money. As for Mr C, he could only rely on “C porridge”, that is porridge plus Vitamin C for nutrition, as he couldn’t even afford vegetables!
Another ten years later, Mr B negotiated a deal with a Hong Kong investment group, and developed a few properties of his own. He is now worth over 1 billion Yuan, he is the famous “billionaire” in the country. He bought Mr A’s company as one of his subsidiaries. The now middle-aged Mr C finally found employment at one of Mr B’s property companies, as a “security guard”. At least it’s not a cleaning job, he was relatively satisfied.
Editor’s Note: “Back to the starting point.”
“Twenty years ago, everyone went their separate ways, a few years later, they met, separated, and met again, except the characters had swapped roles in ‘The ABCs of Life’. Mr B became the main character, but the supporting roles remained supporting roles.” The level-headed Mr B was not careless like Mr A, and nor was he cowardly like Mr C. He viewed life with a sense of balance, I believe he will go far in this game of life.
Translator’s Note: “Fortune favours the brave!”
