A model like Figure 4 is nearer the truth: it shows a view of reading in which the reader can be seen approaching meaning actively. The reader on the left in finding little difficulty in interpreting the text – the meaning is fairly clear to him all along, he has much in common with the writer and few problems with the language. To the reader on the right, however, the same text appears very difficult. To get at the meaning involves what the writer takes for granted that his way forward is continually blocked by problems of unfamiliar vocabulary, ignorance of facts and so on.
