Borland® Introduces New C++ Technology to Accelerate Mobile Application Development
Borland Extends Leadership in Mobile Development Solutions
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - November 12, 2002 : Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq NM: BORL) today introduced C++ Mobile Edition, extending the support of Borland enhanced mobile application development. Jointly developed with Nokia, the Borland® C++ Mobile Edition delivers to an estimated one million Borland C++ developers a fully integrated development environment to speed the creation, testing and deployment of applications for the emerging mobile device market
Designed to integrate seamlessly with all editions of Borland C++Builder 6, Borland C++ Mobile Edition enables developers to rapidly produce C++ applications for the Nokia® Series 60 platform, which runs on the Symbian OS™ an operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones. The Series 60 platform enables software developers, operators and device manufacturers to create customized solutions, driving a large unified applications market.
Developers who have existing Symbian C++ mobile applications may import them to Borland C++ Mobile Edition which is designed not to require a single rewrite of code, gaining the benefits of Borland C++Builder 6 integrated development environment.
"Today's announcement underscores our continued expansion of the Borland wireless strategy, already marked by relationships with wireless industry leaders across Europe, the United States and Japan," said Simon Thornhill, vice president and general manager of rapid application development solutions for Borland. "Borland C++ Mobile Edition provides developers greater support and tightly integrated solutions that are focused on reducing the complexity of building advanced mobile applications and speeding time to market. This new technology offers enterprises greater freedom to develop with real C++ and expand out their wireless offerings quickly and effectively."
The Nokia Series 60 platform is targeted at smartphones, a new class of mobile devices, and includes a graphical user interface, a suite of applications and Series 60 SDK for developers.
"We welcome Borland's support for C++ and Series 60," said Jouko Häyrynen, vice president of Nokia's global developer program, Forum Nokia. "As we have recently announced, Nokia expects to ship 10 million Series 60 devices next year, but the market for developers will be even larger since Series 60 licensing agreements have now been signed with several phone manufacturers who account for 60 percent of the mobile phone market. Borland's C++ technology for mobile devices will enable millions of developers to bring new applications to market on the Series 60 platform for deployment across multiple devices from multiple manufacturers."
According to analyst firm Ovum, nearly 165 million devices capable of running interactive multimedia applications will ship worldwide in 2002.
