Area, region, zone 和belt都可译做“地区”，“地带”。Area通常指面积可测量或计算的地区，界限分明的地区，但不是行政上的地理单位，如：
desert areas in North Africa
vast uncultivated areas
mountain area
或指某地/楼/房间的有特殊用途的一部分，如：an outdoor play area
Area还指具有某种特色、看上去与周围不同的“表面”部分，如：a pink area on one''s arm
Region常指地理上有天然界限或具有某种特色（如气候、自然条件）自成一个单位的地区。在这个意义上，region有时与area通用，如：the Arctic regions 北极地区 the forest/lake region
Region有时也指较大的行政单位，如：autonomous regions
Region还可用来指人体的某个部位，如：pains in the shoulder region
Zone通常指地理上的“（地）带”，尤其是图表上的环形地带，如：the torrid, temperate and frigid zones 热、温、寒带
the tree zone of a high mountain
Zone还可以指带有一定军事、政治特色或为某特殊目的而设的地区，如：
refugees from the war zone
a mined zone （布雷区）
a nuclear-free zone
a demilitarized zone
the border zone
smokeless zones
Belt与zone同义，通常指地面、海洋、空间狭长地带、区域；美国人也用来表示“产区”，如：
the cotton belt of the United States
green belt （环城）绿化地带
The spaceship traveled into the asteroid belt
此外area可用来指知识、兴趣、活动的领域，如：
the electronics area
My special interest lies in the area of 17th century English literature.
Philosophy is not my area.
Region也可用来表示知识、活动的领域，讨论的范围；意思与sphere和realm相同，如：
We had better confine ourselves to scientific facts and not venture into the region of metaphysics.
