Area, region, zone 和belt都可译做“地区”,“地带”。Area通常指面积可测量或计算的地区,界限分明的地区,但不是行政上的地理单位,如:
desert areas in North Africa
vast uncultivated areas
mountain area
或指某地/楼/房间的有特殊用途的一部分,如:an outdoor play area
Area还指具有某种特色、看上去与周围不同的“表面”部分,如:a pink area on one''s arm
Region常指地理上有天然界限或具有某种特色(如气候、自然条件)自成一个单位的地区。在这个意义上,region有时与area通用,如:the Arctic regions 北极地区 the forest/lake region
Region有时也指较大的行政单位,如:autonomous regions
Region还可用来指人体的某个部位,如:pains in the shoulder region
Zone通常指地理上的“(地)带”,尤其是图表上的环形地带,如:the torrid, temperate and frigid zones 热、温、寒带
the tree zone of a high mountain
Zone还可以指带有一定军事、政治特色或为某特殊目的而设的地区,如:
refugees from the war zone
a mined zone (布雷区)
a nuclear-free zone
a demilitarized zone
the border zone
smokeless zones
Belt与zone同义,通常指地面、海洋、空间狭长地带、区域;美国人也用来表示“产区”,如:
the cotton belt of the United States
green belt (环城)绿化地带
The spaceship traveled into the asteroid belt
此外area可用来指知识、兴趣、活动的领域,如:
the electronics area
My special interest lies in the area of 17th century English literature.
Philosophy is not my area.
Region也可用来表示知识、活动的领域,讨论的范围;意思与sphere和realm相同,如:
We had better confine ourselves to scientific facts and not venture into the region of metaphysics.
