Yes, she''s done it again -- recorded another full-length pop confection,
that is. But how many of us felt the same kind of anticipation toward Britney
Spears'' first LP, "...Baby One More Time," as we''re feeling now toward
"Oops!... I Did It Again," which is due to drop on May 16?
Q:Talk about your new album?
A:I''m really excited about this record. Just that I''ve had a lot more involvement
with it, and it''s just really special to me. And every song I can almost
totally relate to. And I think it''s definitely more mature.
Q:What has mom told you never to do? Never get a tattoo? Anything else?
A: Just don''t get a tattoo, and never do drugs. Other than that, I can
do anything else.
Britney has always turned to her mother, Lynne Spears, for personal and
career support. Nearly a decade ago, Mom drove Britney and two of her friends
480 miles from Kentwood, Louisiana to Atlanta, Georgia to an open audition
for "The Mickey Mouse Club."
A: I was like, eight years old. And there were 2000 kids there, and we
all went in this room and we sang for this [guy] Matt Casella. He was the
guy that was the casting director.
Matt Casella: She was so outgoing, and she was also very shy and a little
scared, but once it came time to perform, it was like the switch was on.
A: And he narrowed it down to, like, six kids, and we were so excited.
And all three of us...
mc: I don''t know where her mom had brought [Britney] to prior to these
auditions, but she had so much experience for a nine year old. I don''t
think it was professional experience.
A: ...but [my friends and I] didn''t get it.
Matt hooked Britney up with an agent in New York, and so the then-ten-year-old
Britney and her pregnant mom relocated to the fast time. She eventually
landed a slot on "The Mickey Mouse Club" in Orlando. But when the show
was canceled, it was back to Louisiana and
high-school life.
BS: But I was just at home doing nothing, and I was just, like, so bored.
BS: I was so nervous, because I''m used to performing in front of big crowds
and stuff. And I was walking in here, and it was like executive people
just standing there, looking at you. I was like, "Oh lordy, what am I gonna
do?" So then I sang for all of them, and then like a week later, Jive Records
called me up, and they signed me. And it was like the happiest moment of
my life. It was like, "I''m gonna make my own album!"
Her dreams became reality, but so did some tabloid nightmares, including
speculation about her personal life and her physical appearance.
BS: I mean at first it was hard for me to deal with, but now I''ve gotten
totally used to it. But my mom, she''s really sensitive. I mean, I''m her
baby. You know what I mean? So if anyone is saying anything about me, she''s
like, "I''m going to call that person up and talk to that person!" I''m like,
"Mom, it''s okay, don''t worry about it. It''s okay," you know. She''s just
like that.
Sometimes, when you''re surrounded by so many people, you can still be so
lonely. You just come in at night and you''re like, "Mom, I miss you. I
want to be with you right now."
Q: Are you in love now?
BS: No.
Q: You wish you were. Is that the thing that''s missing now?
BS: Yeah, I would like to have a boyfriend. I mean, it''s a nice feeling
to be loved. Who doesn''t want to be loved? But it''s probably kind of good
that I''m not, because I don''t want to have to miss some-one and [I''m] just
really kind of busy, you know. But yeah, that would be cool.
