Dear Wenxia,
"Out of sight, out of mind". We have another saying, "Absense make the heart grow fonder." This is also true. However, it doesn't usually work for a very long absense. If it did, how would we ever get over the grief and live on when a loved one died? So this ability to carry on and make a life when something wonderful has been lost is a very necessary ability. Oh, and don't believe everything you read in romantic fiction, dear friend.
I hope you will find another lovely person. You and your love from University will never really forget each other. In the future, now and again, you will remember the sweetness you had together, but your present life then, being so much more real, will be what holds your heart.Best wishes, Maryk
Dear JJH,
You wrote about climate change, a very important topic
Today it is very cool again. Cool enough that I thought whether I should heat the house this morning. This is almost unheard of where I live, in July. This area is a very hot summered, semi-desert area. At the other end of my country they are selling water to people in the streets because it is so hot and humid. In the north, the perma frost is melting and things are sinking, and the glaciers are retreating. In the middle of my country there are terrible forest fires.
In Chicago, one of the United States of America's coldest cities in winter, they had an early February day in the past couple of years that was warm enough to go to the beach and sunbathe. In England a lot of sturdy 700 year old trees in St. James Park were all blown down at once. They weren't all rotten, the wind was just fantastically focussed and strong. The weather is screwy and more and more people are waking up and wondering why.
What will happen when it really gets bad, people get very scared, and en masse all over the world they begin to get angry and demand changes because they are afraid, due to what they are experiencing??? We are into a new paradigm.
Nothing like this man-made climate change that affects the whole world has ever happened before in human history. The same way as a world circling, affordable communication system, the internet, has never happened before. More and more, we are finding that we must cooperate as a human race and grow up, or we will not survive. We will survive, though. However, we don't have a lot longer to fool around not taking care of things. But we will wake up.
You and I are privileged to live in this fantastically interesting and pregnant time. It is pregnant, and from it will be born a new way of life. How much of it will you and I see? Who knows? I see some of it beginning already. You will certainly see more than I will because you are a great deal younger. What an interesting time, even if scary and dangerous!
Best wishes, Maryk
Dear Ziheriver,
Many thanks for your very kind words. If I were learning your language, you would be the expert. I just happen to sound like an expert because English is my native language. I wrote a much longer post to you but the computer was so slow I finally lost it. I hope I can find a time of day when it isn't so slow! I hope you will write much more here. You have a lot to offer our forum because of your mature experience. I am sure you will have wise insights on many things that are discussed here. I expect you are more conscious of your English right now because of the growing emphasis there, due to joining the W.T.O.? Reading and writing here is an interesting and easy way to bring your English back up to speed. Keep coming. :-)
Best regards, Maryk
