THE MIRROR
Yvette Vassilli was a very strange teenage girl. Her favourite number was 13 and she loved broken mirrors. She had no friends, the teachers avoided her and there was no love in her family. No one understood Yvette; nobody understood why she had a large evil grin on her face when she died. She had hanged herself in the girl’s bathroom in her school. Glass fragments were shattered on the floor under her dangling body, her reflection in the broken piecies. 13 years later, Yevette’s story became a school legend. Kids talked about it when they ran out of topics to say. People didn’t even bother to dress up as her in Halloween parties like before. The rumors about Yvette’s ghost almost seemed like dumb jokes. Almost.
Magda Harven was a very unlucky girl. She lived with her parents in the ugliest house on the ugliest street. She had bushy red hair and dull grey eyes. With large thick glasses and braces, she walked around the school almost invisible. What Magda hated most about herself was, that she was afraid of everthing. This 13 year old hated to be alone. One day, Magda was caught taking a small nap in Math class. As punishment, she had to clean all the blackboards. Magda had never stayed in school so late, by the time she had finished her last blackboard, it was almost seven. So, you can imagine how much breaths she took just to make the decision to go in the girl’s bathroom—the one Yvette had died in.‘Hello?’Magda whispered as she pushed open the door. She felt stupid; this wasn’t a very popular bathroom. Magda went there because all the other bathrooms were at the other side of the school. She would hate to walk all the way by herself. Magda was now facing three toilets in separte stalls. To her right, there were 2 sinks and a mirror. Sunlight shone through a small window above the stalls. The bathroom was glowing in a pinkish color. Magda managed to finish her bussiness as quickly as possible, then went to one of the sinks to wash her hands. The tap was normal; the towels were normal. She looked into the mirror—it stared back at her. It wasn’t a normal mirror. There was more than just simple reflection in it. Magda stared hard into it, her heart beating fast. She could see herself in it all white and shaking and then she thought she saw another face. At that exact moment, the mirror cracked.Magda ran, she ran all the way home. She jumped on her bed and covered herself with her blamket. She thought she heard a girl laugh, a wicked wicked laugh as the mirror cracked. Magda could feel goosebumps on her skin. An hour later, she had calmed down. She remembered her geography homework she needed to hand in the next day. Magda decided to forget about the bathroom and all. Just then, she realized she couldn’t do her geography homework after all. She had left her bag in the girl’s bathroom. The next day, Magda decided to go and get her bag. This time, she took her best and only friend, Jaine Watson with her. Jasnine was almost as unattractive as Magda. She had short brown hair and thick eyebrows. Jaine was left-handed. She did everything with her left hand. It seemed that there was no use of her right hand besides decoration. Jaine wasn’t afraid of ghosts, she wasn’t afraid of anything. So, towards sunset, the girls set for the girl’s bathroom.Jaine pushed open the door and Magda followed her in. There seemed nothing abnormal in the bathroom, Magda’s schoolbag was lying on the floor.‘Well?’ asked Jaine.Magda picked up her bag and looked around, to her horror, the crack on the mirror had dissappeared. She put her hand to her mouth to stop herself from screaming.‘What now?’ asked Jaine impatiently.‘There was a crack on the mirror yesterday when I came here. I’m sure of it.’ Said Magda in a trembling voice. ‘I don't see any cracks.’ Said Jaine looking confused. Still staring at the mirror, Magda said, ‘Never mind.’‘I need to go to the toilet.’ Said Jaine.Magda opened her mouth to shout no, but her voice didn’t come out. She watched her friend go in a stall and she suddenly felt very unpleasant. Just then, she heard a whisper, a girl’s whisper coming from the mirror. She turned around to face the mirror. In the mirror, Magda saw Jaine’s stall door open slowly. Then, a figure emerged from it; it wasn’t Jaine. It was a girl, the skinniest looking girl she had ever seen. The girl had wild black hair and chalk white skin. Her eyes were very dark and very staring.By that time, Magda was too scared to move, she kept staring at the girl. The girl grinned, a terrible evil looking grin that was so big it looked as if her mouth was coming off her face. Magda held her breath and swung around only to find Jaine’s stall door closed and no girl was to be seen.‘It’s just my imagination’, thought Magda. To make sure, she called, ‘Janie?’No answer.‘Janie, are you there? Answer me!’ She called again.Still no answer.‘This is not funny!’Magda started to feel both scared and angry, her palms felt sweaty. She walked to the stall and knocked on the door.Suddenly, a thrill, wicked laughter filled the bathroom. Almost immediately, blood started flowing out of the stall. Ameile turned around to find herself nose to nose with the dark ghosty girl. Magda didn’t wait, she took one step to the door and raced home. Magda was sick. Mrs Harven was very worried about her, but when Magda told her about the ghost, Mrs Harven didn’t believe her daughter. Magda had terrible dreams, she couldn’t look into the mirrors and she thought the ghost girl’s face could be seen everywhere. She couldn’t be alone, and she didn’t talk. Mrs Harven called the doctor, but the doctors told her there was nothing physically wrong with her daugther. Magda had been through a shock, but it was recovering in slow progress. On the third week, Magda was able say things. However, she still refused to go in the bathroom, or go to school. Mrs Harven became angry.‘You have to go to school Magda, you’ve been missing too many classes.’ Mrs Harven demanded. Magda looked at her in horror, ‘No, mom I can’t go!’‘You know, I’m starting to think you are faking it. Whatever you had been through, it’s over. I’m not going to believe in any ghosts stories. You have to go to school tomorrow!’Magda panicked, she was starting to sweat. She needed to find something to make her mom believe her. Then, she thought of Jaine. ‘Mom, Jaine’s gone, her disappearance is the evidence!’‘Jaine, who’s Jaine?’ was Mrs Harven’s answer.Magda had expected an answer, but certainly not this one. The room suddenly became very cold. ‘Jaine, my friend Jaine. Mom, you know her, I’ve known her since we were in kintergarden!’Mrs Harven simply stared at her confused. ‘You’re making stories up again arent’ you! I don’t care, you must go to school tomorrow!’
Magda went to school the next day. Her mother had sent her to her classroom. There was no sign of Jaine. Actually, it seemed that Jaine never existed. Nobody knew her, her pictures on the wall had dissappeared, and there wasn’t even an empty seat. Magda stayed in the classroom the whole day, she didn’t go to the girl’s bathroom. She thought things over, the more she thought about it, and the angrier she felt. Finaly she decided to go to the girl’s bathroom, for Jaine.Magda kicked the door open; no one was inside. She went in and the door slammed shut behind her. Magda jumped at the noise. An evil laughter filled the room, words in blood appeared on the walls. ‘Welcome to my party!’ A creepy song began to play. Magda turned around to the mirror and saw her friend Jaine, sitting on a chair—in the mirror. Jaine sat there with her head hanging, her eyes staring and her face very white. The horrible girl was standing beside her, with the wicked grin on her face. For a split minute, Magda wanted to run away, but she reminded herself the reason she came here. Her heart was beating fast and she was breathing very fast. Without thinking, she smashed the mirror with her bag.
It was the school janitor who heard the screams—at least he thought it sounded like screams. He ran to the girl’s bathroom and as he was just about to kick the door open, it opened. Out came a red haired girl with cuts on her face holding a brown haird girl who looked tired and pale. Both of them were sent to hospital.
1 month later, Magda and Jaine were out of the hospital. It was the summer holidays so Magda invited Jaine to her house to play. They talked about the mirror, the Yvette the ghost and how Magda rescued Jaine. They weren’t scared of mirrors or ghosts anymore. They both knew they would never see Yvette again. The girls played all day, they made funny costumes out of paper bags and wore them infront of the mirror. They wrote down the names of each design. Magda did the writing, but her hand began to hurt so Janie took over. Jaine took the pen and began to write. Magda watched her carefully; there was something different about her friend. Then, she suddenly realized it.‘Jaine! Your using your right hand!’ Magda exclaimed.‘Oh? I always did.’ Was Jaine’s reply. Then Jaine grinned, a grin so wide that it seemed that it seemed that her mouth was coming off her face.
