HOw do you find urself adapting to reverse culture shock? (part 2: career wise):
A letter to Internal Control Manager from 总公司, SEA.
Hi F,
I seem to be better in typing emails as compare to verbal communication.
I remember you telling me the first day during your current visit to our company that, no one should be above or below policies that are listed or inplace, and the way you promoted equal opportunity, wide range of exposure provided by our company. I was very glad. I thought at last, someone unbiased, someone who could speak up to inequality, someone i could probably trust, seek advice from; most importantly, someone who does not take any side.
However, it seems like a gigantic mistake of mine to jump to that conclusion.
How do you expect me to react after hearing from supposing the "judge" that, "too bad, you have the shortest stick here".
I can understand taht, to you, it doest make much of a difference of whom sign and where and who approve the paper work first. Because , at the end of the day, all you care about is whether everyone follow the procedure the policies you implemented. For me, it does. a huge difference in deed. Imagine, you reporting to J, but it is other people that you are integorating with. Meantime, the policies you are working around, is allowing sraff from other department other divisions asking you to process paper work(or draft out policies that might not even be needed in ur case in specific) that is not even approved by their head of department. Under certain circumstances, it would be in the case of whcih the department manager is not even aware of the occurence of such incidencets. And thinking of that you would contribute to the company, working hard, at the end of the day, all your hard work got chuck out of the window just because other deparment has not been having mutual agrement and adequate communication on the issue before it comes to you. How would you feel?
To give you a more clear cut example, imagine, not asking the marketing department to have a thorough agreement among themselves now, is as good as encouraging inefficeincy rooting in tge company. What would happened if a stack of scheme notes is given to me asking me to prepare the commitment forms, where the sales director has not even sign nor has he approve it. What's worse, in some cases, he might not even aware of such activities. This, is not the case allowed with sales department. On the other hand, why, is this, even allowed, or even encouraged in the marketing department; in which, marketing director's signature is not required on the scheme notes? What difference would it make, if the sales director were to tell me that he is not going to sign the scheme notes either until he sees the commitment forms letting the risk of whole piolfe will get chuck out of the window at the end of the day( just because of the fact that i have the shortest stick here??) Is that the way we are suppose to implement eficiency in a multi national corporation like our company? I wonder. Are these consequence allowed here, in order to help our company improve, cut cost, and does this help to achieve what Mr. Graham, the APac precident's goal of selling millions of products in MSB or even asia pacific in years to come? Why are we letting the bad habits rooting in the company where in the first place we know clearly deep down in our heart and mind that time could be spend else where efficiently and constructively doing something that is good for the comapnny, instead of wasting time running around for approvals and repeating the same schemenotes and commitment forms over and over again?
"they will approve it, and it is just a matter of time, sooner of later". That's what you told me. Are you aware of how much a difference it is for a driver to be able to break and avoid a car accident? It could involve thousands of dollars. How much money our company could lose if we fail to lock in the exchange rate for one country to another? It could be millions, trillions or even zillions of dollars. Yes, the time i am wasting here on these commitment forms would be much less significant as compare to those transactions. But as you said, it is not just me that is having the problem. The officer incharge of purchasing offer is facing the same problem too. Wouldnt' it actually mean that it could be everyone in the company is suffering from this typical "lack of communication" culture that is not only rooting but growing in our company, in which KF MSB is only established for what, 11 months? How inefficient would we grow in times to come?
If you still insist taht, you dont see a major problem here, and that the fact i am not yours but C's(the MSB General manager) resources,I guess the only two choices i am left wit is to join the party or leave it. Should i really do as what the recruitment agent advised, to not be so ambitious when I am in this company?
Looking forward to your favourable reply.
Regards,CT
