My first talking with a foreigner was about two years ago. I was so deeply impressed with that and never forget, because this is an interesting and embarrassed
experience for me.
I had learned English by myself for two years and I wondered how I did. I knew
a language was a tool for communication and we learned it for use. I was eager
to communicate with someone came from English countries face to face in English,
but seldom had chance for this.
One day, my friend Lily told me that an American couple taught English at the college in our city and we could go to their classes. I was so glad to hear that.
Then next afternoon, Lily and I went to the classroom early and waited for the foreign teacher’s coming. To tell the truth, that time I was excited and nervous
very much, for I didn’t know if I could understand him.
Mr Curt came in when the bell was ring. He saw and went toward me directly, because I was only one new face in this classroom. “How are you?My name is Curt. What’s your name?”he said to me with smile. “How do you do! My name is Linda…
” I answered nervously in the prepared words in advance.
Then Curt started give us lesson, but my brain was empty completely. “It’s extremely awful,” I thought, “How can I answer with HOW DO YOU DO? I’m so stupid
!” Curt’s pure American accent passed by my ears, but I didn’t know what he said. After class, Curt asked me how about his lesson, I said, “Your voice is very nice. But I just understand a little.”
Later, we went to the class for Marian. Marian is Curt’s wife. Curt and Marian
hold an English corner at the collage. We often took part in these activities. Sometimes we went out together and communicated each other. Not only we became good friends but also our English made a great progress. Half year later, Curt and
Marian ended their teaching at the college and returned America. I really appreciate and miss them very much.
