Communion in oral English
As we know, everyone has his own accent on speaking, even he pronounces his mother language. So there are too much dialect when people from all over the wrold
speak English. As business man dealing with foreign trading, we cannot avoid the
possibility of communion in oral English with others speaking various accent. So there might be some misunderstanding during it. I have some experience of it although I am a newcomer for foreign trading who have been in it for just one year and two months. And here I am listing my experince and lesson to share with you. And I hope that you can make it rich with yours.
My first talk is through phone with a regular customer of my company who is from
Pakistan. In fact it is very easy, my boss just want me to ask the customer whether he received our email and let him to reply it. I had been no speaking English for six years since graduated from school that time. I was so nervous and it
was hard to me to open my mouth to speak English. I dialed the number and began
to consider what I should say when the "Du..." is rising from receiver. But unfortunately I was too nervous to make my brain just blank. After got my meaning,
the man promised to reply my email as soon as possible. And then he give me his
question about his last consignment, such as pcking details, shipment infromation and so on. But I know nothing about them, so I had to say sorry just and promised to reply him later. The calling turned to meaningless suddenly. We can see from the above that we should make a preparation before dial the number. At least
we should review present business with whom you will call. We should have a profile of what we will tell the receiver and what question will the one raise, even how to answer his questions. And if you feel nervous, you should try to relax
yourself before calling. Otherwise, it just can make the phone worse.
Talking through phone is the hardest of communion in foreign lauguage. For we can not see our partners expression and can not use physical language. The only we
can do is try our best to catch the pronunciation. So you should pay all of your attention to it. But what will you do if the other end can not get your pronunciation? One of my customer from Korean come to visit our factory once. And we sent a car to receive him in hotel. He gave me a call to ask the No. plate of our
car. But he could not get my pronunciation of " five ". I tried so many times,
but he still could not get my meaning. I was almost crazy and said " f-i-v-e, five", "oh! I got it" he said. Aha, it is so simple! And another time it was in Canton Fair. I introduced our booth No. to a man from Mexico. Our booth was in B channels that time. But we mixed with B, C and D that time. I said "B" " C? or D?
" he continue to asked. " B, B for book!" one of customer from Pakistan who was
just aside me that time remind me. " Oh, yes, I said b , b for book, for black"
" oh, " the receiver said " I got it, it is b , b for book". Then he got me successfully at last. What I want to say is you can try to express your meaning in another way when you are in the matter of pronunciation. You can spell the simple
words and try to find a reference to explain your meaing.
Face to face communication is easier relatively. We can use our phsical langue to express or even write it down. Once, it was also in the Canton Fair, a man from Europe asked me whether we have welding fittings. I did not know what does welding mean that time. Then the man picked up a fitting and explain to me, "Like this, ci...ci..." he told me while dotting in the fittings with his finger and imitating the voice of welding.
Customer's visit is very common for business. And maybe your customer wants to know something about your city except the profile of your company. So we have to
make it clear about where we live. Such as the area, population, education, touristy point and so on. With the preparation, you reply him like an expert when he ask you those question. Do not think these are nothing to do with your business, in fact, this is a good beginning of your cooperation. If you are not even familiar with where you live how come others believe you can be professioanl your
line?
Of course, for a professional interpreter, the professional English is important
. The above is just a lash-up for green one. Mastering a fluent English is the final resolvent.
