Steams of Life (4)
---- A Good Companion Counts
My friend likes to go outside for a walk in the evenings. He calls this city a magnificent maze, to explore it is of great pleasure for him. Honestly, the first
time when I heard him using the word “explore”, I was greatly amazed. For me,
whosoever would call a brief night walk an exploration?
But later as I came to know him more, gradually I began to understand and value
the very word. I said once that China was not the first destination that he had
explored. Before he set his foot on this country land, he had been to most of European countries. I guess probably because of the special experience, life is more like an adventure for him than it is for me.
I came to this city five months earlier than he did. My area was once my whole world. Every morning I went out to study at the school nearby, and came back by the same route in the evening. I went out for shopping in the same supermarket on
the weekends. And on the weekdays I went to do some sports in the same university. Looking back to that period, my life seemed SO pigeonholed, and the one who
pigeonholed it was not others but myself.
It’s a shame, isn’t it? If I chose to live my life that way, what difference would it make whether I lived in my backward hometown or this internationalized city? Of course I didn’t tell my friend of my once commonplace, monotonous life.
Nor did he try to exert influence, by asking or probing, on my life. It’s just, by contrast, that I myself saw how awful my attitude toward life was, and how
badly and urgently I should change it for better. And upon so, I did.
Now though my everyday life is still very much like a routine, my way of lookingat it has greatly changed. I stop treating my pursuit of becoming a postgraduate
as an ordeal. Nor do I think I should deprive myself of every tiny pleasure so
as to fully concentrate on my study. Life should be fun always, as long as we are willing to think favorably of it, shouldn't it?
I once told my friend that it was lucky for me to meet, and then know him in my
life, for he showed me, in a way, that how actually our attitude towards life counted. To this he was vastly surprised, saying, I, to some extent, influenced his thinking of life as well. I didn’t ask him how I could manage to do that, nor
he me. I guess, maybe it will always happen once we come to know someone totally different from ourselves. By conversing and comparing the difference, we grow
and become better people than we used to be.
