1. My Berlin diary for December was limited tofour words.我12月2日 柏林日记只有四个词。

be limited to:仅限于,限制在……范围之内,又如:

eg:His stay in the city is limited to 4 days a month. 他每个月在这座城市只可停留4天。

eg:Their reading is limited to computer science and telecommunications.

他们阅读的范围仅限于计算机科学与(远距离)电讯。

2. The Foreign Office stillholding up my passport and exit visa which worries meDid my last broadcast from Berlin tonight.外交部仍然压着我的护照和出境签证,真叫人担心。今晚在柏林进行了最后 一次广播。 注意日记体的特点。写日记的目的一般是记录下对自己来说比较重要的事件,只要自己能看明白就 行,所以往往用省略句。第一句省略了谓语动词一部分is,第二句主语I省略。日记中的I经常省略,又如第四段 中的Got my passport and official permission to leave tomorrow.有时主语和动词全省略,如 (I had) Nothing to do but pack.

hold up:使延误,阻止,

eg: The storm held up our flight for 40 minutes. 那场暴风雨使我们的航班延误了40分钟。

eg:They had been held up on the road by an accident so they were late.

他们在路上因一起车祸而耽误了时间,因此迟到了。

eg: I do hope my application for leave won''t be held up too long.

希望我请假的申请尽早批下来。

which worries me是定语从句,关系代词 which代表整个主句的意思

eg: He said he was busy, which was true. 他说他很忙,这倒是真的。

eg: James Watt watched a steaming kettle for quite a while, which rather annoyedhis aunt.

詹姆斯?瓦特楞着看那冒气的水壶看了好长一段时间,这使他的姑妈很恼火。

2. “……Nothing to do now but pack.”—— ……The only thing that remains to be done is packing. 省略, (I had) Nothing to do but pack.

Nothing (to do) but 除了…什么也不能做,只能

eg: He could do nothing but wait. 他只能等。

eg: he boy did nothing at home but watch TV. 这孩子在家里除了看电视什么也不做

pack (up): to put things into cases, boxes, etc. for taking somewhere or for storing.装,打行李,准备行装

eg:I forgot to pack my toothpaste. 我忘把牙膏装在行李里。

eg:We''re off to Greece tomorrow and I haven’t even started packing yet.

明天我们就要去希腊了,可是现在我还没有开始收拾东西呢。 Unpack打开(包裹,行李,箱子)

had thought过去完成时,表示一直在考虑

think sth. over/ think over what, when, how, etc.: consider sth. carefully before reaching a decision

Get sth. done= have sth. done, to get me hanged,修饰enough.绞刑是纳粹德国时期实施死刑的重要方式。

eg:We must get everything arranged before the meeting.我们要在会议前把一切安排好。

eg: Hang, hung, hung挂, hang, hanged, hanged 上吊,绞刑

6. The morning I got my passport and exit visa I realized I had less than twenty-four hours tofigure outa way of getting my Berlin diaries out.

lay sth. out: spread sth. out把……摊开/放下

eg:Lay out the map on the desk and let''s find the location of the town.

which had been……是定语从句,修饰a number of my broadcast scripts.

as passed for broadcast 作主语 each of which的补足语。

在相应的主动语态的句子里则作宾语的补足语。请比较下列例句:

eg: The censors stamped the scripts as passed for broadcast.检查官在稿子上盖了章批准广播。

eg:The president signed his application for retirement as approved.校长在他的申请书上签了批准他退休。

eg: His application for retirement was signed by the president as approved.他的退休申请书校长签字予以批准。

as 后面可跟名词、形容词、分词等。

11.On top I put a few General Staff maps I had picked up from friends. 在最上面我放了几张多从朋友那里搞到的总参谋部使用的地图。

pick up:得到,弄到;买到,

eg: ——Where did you pick up that nice little mobile phone of yours? 你从哪里买到你那个漂亮的小手机?

dispatch: a report sent to a newspaper from one of its writers who is in anothertown or country,

eg:The UN dispatched a peace-keeping force to the African country.联合国向这个非洲国家派遣了一支维和部队。

hard-nosed精明而讲究实际的,(犬等)嗅觉不灵的,顽固的,丑陋的

(1) can''t help but do sth.:不可避免会做……;忍不住做……

eg:He can''t help but reject the offer if there are strings attached. 如果有附带条件,他不可能不回绝。

eg:We couldn''t help but laugh when we heard his story. 听了他的故事,我们忍不住大笑起来。

(2) smell sth./ sb. out:嗅出,(口语)探出,

eg:The dog smelt out drugs in the suitcase. 那狗闻出了箱子里的毒品。

eg:The legendary detective is said to be able to smell out murderers. 据说那个传奇式的侦探能嗅出杀人犯。

16. Maybe I had just better begin toflush them down the toilet. Maybe I had better tear them to pieces and throw them into the toilet and flush them down. 或许我最好还是现在就动手,把日记扔进马桶冲掉。

foreigner though I was: though I was a foreigner,是正式的用法。

22. I was going togamble on their inspection ending there, before they dug deeper to my diaries.—— The success of my plan would depend on their stopping the inspection when they saw the stamped broadcast scripts and not going further to find what was beneath the scripts. But this was a great risk to take.我要把宝押在他们的检查到此为止上,而不再往下翻到我的日记。

gamble on sth./ doing sth.:希望成功而冒着失败的危险做……,压赌注

eg:You shouldn''t gamble on one exams. 你不应该把命运压在一次考试上。

他要求再举行一次投票,冒着失败的危险寻求更多人的支持。

eg: You shouldn''t gamble on the supply of spare parts arriving promptly.

你可不能把赌注全押在零件能立即到位这一点上。 在这个句型中,gamble后面的动名词表示的是主语的行为(如getting more support),如果不是就需要在动名词的前面加上一个名词短语作其逻辑主语,如their inspection和 the supply of spare parts.它们的行为分别是 ending和 arriving.

eg: All dangerous things should be placed beyond children''s reach. 一切危险品都要放在孩子们够不到的地方。

eg: Finally he found salesmanship was beyond his reach. 最后他终于发现他搞不了推销。

put up with: to accept an unpleasant situation or person without complaining忍受

eg: I can''t put up with their quarrelling anymore. 我再也受不了他们的争吵了。

和上句一样,作者连用两个any或以any-开头的词,表示强调。

great一词是纳粹报纸用得最多、最滥的词,这里是反语。

44. I had only to hold out this one more day, and the whole nightmare for me would be over, though it would go on and on for millions of others.
