Unlike Eric Draven, the character, who had to wait only 12 months to come back to life, fans of The Crow: Stairway To Heaven had to wait eight years before they could finally get their talons on the complete series on DVD. Looking back to 1994 and the death of Brandon Lee, most fans probably felt it was the end of The Crow forever. Well, just like the storyline of the comic, the black bird reemerged on the small screen four years later with Mark Dacascos filling in as Eric Draven.
Mark Dacascos - From crows to wolves:
When Brandon Lee died on the set of The Crow, executives and producers had to figure out how to complete the movie without its lead actor. Thankfully, they embraced new technology and turned to CGI. In 1998, when the idea of a Crow TV series was kicked around, the obvious choice to fill Draven's shoes was martial arts actor, Mark Dacascos. Really, there were two reasons why Dacascos was perfect for the role. He looked a lot like Brandon Lee and he was in great shape. Even though The Crow: Stairway To Heaven only hung around for one season, Mark's gig as Eric Draven was enough to land him a role in Christophe Gans' 2001 action fest, Brotherhood of the Wolf. Now that the series arrives on DVD, expect to find a cool gag reel and biography centered on Dacascos, plus nine pages of articles from Kung Fu magazine.
Music makes the show.
Although the series didn't last long, The Crow: Stairway To Heaven had a kick-ass soundtrack. In 1998, the idea of cool TV music was still in its infancy when it came to big name bands and artists. In its entire 22 episode run, The Crow: Stairway To Heaven featured such awesome musical acts as Rob Zombie, The Crystal Method, Delirium, Bif Naked, The Painkillers, Oleander and Xero. If anything, relegating the bands to the background on an ongoing basis reinforced the grungy urban tone of The Crow. Since Eric Draven was an up-and-coming rocker, the aggressive tunes tied in perfectly. On DVD, despite an underachieving Dolby Digital 2.0 mix, fans can isolate Peter Manning Robinson's original score, and then switch over to hear the bands in each episode. What would The Crow be without a killer soundtrack?
