--Now the big tobacco companies are in great trouble in the USA and Canada because they had to pay billions of dollars to the families of people who died from using their products. Also it was found that they put additives in their cigarettes to make them much more addictive so they could keep their customers captive. The governments are against them here. It makes the cost of hospital care and health care very high and that is hard for everybody. It is killing too many fathers and mothers. Now some doctors will not treat smokers for some diseases because they know they will not heal well anyway. So the tobacco companies have decided to make their money in developing countries. They are pushing the use of cigarettes heavily overseas among those who are vulnerable and can still be fooled. Studies I have read show that the trend here now is that educated people, professional people and people with good incomes are no longer smoking. Things have changed so that those who are smoking are the ill-educated young and poor, and those older who are addicted and haven't been able to quit yet. It is not allowed to smoke on airplanes even for long flights, and not to try it in secret in the plane's toilets because an alarm will sound and the person will be in great trouble. In my province it is not allowed to smoke indoors in any public place because the people who work there should not be made ill from second-hand smoke. That means not in universities, restaurants, offices, government buildings, and some bars. Smokers must go outside to smoke. In schools young children are taught how bad smoking is for the body and for those around them. They are not allowed to show smoking in new movies. So to us it looks very strange in the old movies where the cigarette companies paid to have the charming hero and heroine smoking so that people would want to be like them and so would smoke. Cigarette packages in Canada show large and horrible pictures of diseased body parts in colour. They have health warnings and say how bad it is for the baby if pregnant women smoke. I feel sorry for old people that I see smoking because I know that they got hooked before it was known that tobacco was such a poison to the body. Here we can now tell that smoking makes your breath, hair and clothes stink because we don't have to be in the smoke everywhere we go. Lots of people hate it now. They don't want to be near smokers so that they won't pick up the stink.
