Who is unqualified? This story happened in a common junior middle school on March 7th, 2001. A student in Grade 3 beat one of his classmates and abused his Chinese teacher in class. So the teacher in charge of the class asked his mother to go to the school. The leader of the school suggested that the student should stay at home for one or two days. During that time, the student should change his bad habits and promise that he would not do that again. However, this mother didn’t want to accept this. She said angrily that it is illegal to ask a student to leave school like that. And the exam to higher schools is coming in July. Her son must get ready for it. So he can’t leave school, even just for a short time. Moreover, she refused to pay the money for the medical treatment of the other student who was beaten by her son. This story was made publicly by a reporter of a local newspaper. It is said this reporter is a relative of the boy’s mother. The news aroused a discussion in this city. Most of the citizens said that the teacher should be more patient and warm-hearted. And nowadays the teachers have good salary, so they ought to have the responsibility to teach every student well. I am a teacher. This doesn’t mean that I must stand by the teachers’ side. But there is something that many people, including of the reporter, don’t know. First of all, most of the teachers in this school have got 1000—1500 yuan a month. Some parents have ever abused the teachers that the money he gives to his son every month is more than what the teachers have got. I think none of the teachers would criticize the students on purpose. And their way to educate the students is always misunderstood by some students’ parents. They say something rude to make the teacher embarrassed. To our surprise, one of them made a call to the teacher, saying, “ If you still criticize my son, I will ask someone to beat you.” The teachers have hard work, but they can’t be repaid the respect. Each class has 55—65 students. Most of them are the worst students from the primary schools of this district. Some of them don’t respect their teachers at all. They lack self-control. They are the trouble-makers in every class and of course their results are very bad. It is ridiculous for me to hear that the mother said her son would get ready for the exam. If he cared about the study and the marks, how could he have time to make such big trouble at this crucial time? So it’s very natural to hear that something bad happened in some class almost every day. Secondly, the exam to higher schools still exists. If a school can have more students who have got enough marks to go to the higher school, it is regarded a good school. Thus, every teacher has a heavy burden. If you can’t teach the students to get higher marks, you will be laid off. This is one word by a headmaster. As a teacher, he can be abused not only by some students, by some students’ parents, by some school leaders, but also by some people who have great influence in the society. How can he teach his students to be upright, qualified and respected persons? I guess in a qualified society, with qualified leaders of schools, a qualified teacher can teach every student well. Something must be done to prevent both the teachers and students from being hurt. Otherwise, this kind of things will never end.
