This essay has been sent to the admission office in Surrey University which is written by me.Now I am waiting for thire reply. In a maze...__________________________Personal StatementI have just completed my 4-year undergraduate course (Full-time) and received my diploma at Hunan University, P.R. China. Unfortunately, my average score is under 80 because of low mark of some subjects: the score in my specialty subjects were excellent (over 90). Furthermore, during my studies, I attended many programs and received a number of honors. (Please refer to my Curriculum Vitae)
My major is computer science and technology. I chose it because I expected it to be a field which will bring me brilliant career prospects. It is of greatest importance that this field is my biggest passion back all the time. By the contrast between undergraduate and postgraduate’s knowledge of specialty, I feel that what I have learned in my undergraduate study is still not enough for me. I really desire the chance to learn more.
Being a college student and a computer lover, I concentrate on Computer Networks, Database Systems and Programming. During a course computer networks in my junior year, for example, I had not only tried my best to learn the essential theories but gained practical knowledge as well. I worked in the Network Association in our university as the technological Director, and did an excellent job in the planning, designing and implementing our campus networks. Through this fieldwork, I gained a great deal of experience on how to put theory into practice, and found that only knowledge of basic theories is not enough, that is to say, solving some technical problems needs relevant practical experience.
One evening, of this fieldwork in computing center, when I had finished the debugging of core switches, my counselor Mr. Huang steeped the tea in boiling water to make a pot of tea. ‘We are on giants’ shoulders,’ he sampled a mouthful of tea and said with deep voice. ‘So if you want to pursue a higher goal in life, you must look beyond what you see. Cast your net broadly.’ Then he showed me an exciting tour about distributed networking technologies which unfolded an extensive world before me. I came to realize that widening my horizon would be significant to my creativity and my future development. The night wore on, but I was a changed person.
Because of my commendable performances in that fieldwork, I was recommended by my tutor to the IT career certified center to study more about networking technologies. After the course, I am able to install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN, and dial access services for small networks (100 nodes or fewer) and achieved Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certificate successfully. At present, I am studying a CCNP and CCSP course which can help me to obtain an advanced or journeyman knowledge of networks.
In the last term, I did my part-time job at Powerise Software Park Co., Ltd which is noted for Java2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) field in China. Fortunately, my graduation project was also accomplished using Java programming language. My job entailed designing database systems and backstage programming with some other colleagues. The project, a shopping online website, was very complicated, but we finished it with our creative ideas in infrastructure and surpassed the client’s demands. I also benefited a lot from this project and became familiar with many things such as demand analysis, conceptual design, Logic design of databases, and frameworks of software. Apart from that, I also learned how to work as a team efficiently.
Subsequently, with substantial Object-Oriented Programming basis and abundant experience, I received my Sun Certified Java2 Programmer (SCJP) certificate after completing the Sun Services Course.
During my graduation project, I integrated all I had learned, including Data Structures, Programming, Networks, Database and Software Engineering and completed my final thesis quite effectively. Now, I am working at Hunan Open Source Technology Co., Ltd, with responsibility for Networking System Integration.
The University of Surrey is an international university which has a world-class reputation for its excellent quality of teaching, innovative research and high employment rate. Browsing the university’s website, I find that the MSc in Internet Computing is aimed at students who wish to develop expertise in Distributed Systems and Contents Technology. These two key Internet technologies are also my focus. Up to now, I have learned a number of principles and concepts about these two techniques from IEEE Distributed Systems Online by self-study. I was captivated by its technological content and have a great longing for my career prospects.
According to these, I wish to pursue a Master degree in Internet Computing at the University of Surrey to further my study. I truly believe that by taking the academic curriculum of a postgraduate at the University of Surrey, I can further extend, deepen my theoretical knowledge and practical skills, while developing my imagination and promoting my creativity. After my postgraduate study, I will return to work as a technical manager or consultant in the company and work on research in specific fields of computer networking and distributed systems.
Although some aspects of my academic background may not fully conform to entry requirements, I hope that my experiences may offer you to consider me to enter the University of Surrey, and I will be very appreciated and treasured if I can get the chance.
