Is Being Thin Everything For A Girl?
With the Spring Festival around the corner, many of my classmates are planning a
trip back home.Among them is one of my formal roomates, who is now renting a house outside campus with some other classmates.
You know, for medical interns like us,the name of festival means nothing. We don't
get holidays like everyone else.So I haven't given the idea of a homeward trip
any thought. But her boyfriend is in her hometown, and also parents and brother and sisters. It is understandable for a her to plan to go back for this big traditionalholiday. To make it realistic, she arranged it by working shifts.By that what
I am trying to say is that she may work more in a period of time, and rest more later. Then the later period of time can be used for a trip home.
Anyhow,we two, have to saty in this city for this coming Spring Festival.
As the dining hall of school will be totally unavailable during the holiday, and
many restaurants around our school will also be closed for the same sake,I was hit by the sudden idea of spending the festival with her---staying in her 'It's almost impossible for us to enjoy meals during workdays with having a meal on-time our biggest luxury.
When I happily suggested this to my formal roomate, her eyebrows were locked in an uneasy manner."...Well,you are welcomed to live with me.But...a big meal...?Well,don't mention that to me,I beg you."
I was confused.
She went on by further explaining,"I am going back home to visit my boyfriend,"she siad."And it is very likely that I may also meet his parents face to face".Noticing me still staring at her in bewildered wonder, she went on,"That's the reason why I have to go on a diet."
"Go on diet? She?Again?"I nearly counld not help speaking out.She is merely 50 kilos or so,and with the height of 160cm.In fact, she is so bony and is well-known
among us for her seemingly cruel treat to her own self.Look at her list of diet,
and you, despite the identity of a layman to medicine, should shake your head and
say,"Oh,would that satisfyher with necessary nutrition?I am afraid i don't think
so."As facts turn out,I do not, either. But that is her way of living, and as by-standers,we can do nothing except to suggest her to pay more attention to her nutrition in diets.
This, together with a piece of news I came cross in a medicine-related newspaper
earlier today, raised the question in my mind:Is being thin everything for a girl
?
I am now taking my internship in an orthopedic hospital. And it is reported in the newspaper that many girls in their youngthful days are now ,strange enough, suffering from osteoporosis---a defaul in bone in which the bone is not strong but
fragile, even unable to shoulder the weight of one's own body.As a result,a lot of young girls have to go under operation for their bone fractures, with the post-
operation task even more tough:revovering from osteoporosis instead of bone fracture.
This is,however, never an easy thing. It takes months, usually years, and requires
strongly for a balanced,nutritious meal-planning.
Then why,are many girls still risking their health for this "beauty cause"?In my
eyes,it is mostly due to the following factors:
Life today has been much easier for most people, and they no longer have to worry
about food as their parents may probably did in their youngth. And it is natural
for them to pursur physical attraction after their basic need are met .
And our country is now in such a stage when transformations of society, economy, and people's outlooks on life are undergoing rapid ,even uncontrollable changes. With western movies, magazines flooding in,they have brought with them somewhat trash and of course fault ideas :Being thin is everything a female wants.
In order to be thin, girls nearly risk everything.Health?I never heard about it!Balanced diet? Will that bring too much nutrition?Yes?Then I don't want to give this thought even the time of a second.Drugs? Can it help me to be thin?Yes?Oh great,I want a try!Diarrea as a side-effect?Never mind!
In this way, young girls are blinded by this trend.
Being a doctor,or a doctor-to-be,I have witnessed this trend and am becoming growingly concerned and worried.Government and media should do more to tell people
how the human body functions. And a healthy way of life should be advocated in loud voice.Being thin can and should never override the urge to stay healthy.A skeleton is unboubtedly thin enough, but never beautiful or healthy or anything. It will be too late if we let this trend prevail.Begin now,and go to a health counselor, get every information you and your body need, and stick closely to it,is exactly what I am trying to suggest here.
