幕后制作一个黑人家庭那或喜笑颜开、或惨淡无助的旅程构成了影片的主线，表面上如此，实际中又不尽全面。大多数的美国家庭驾车游之初都是亲密无间、相互关爱有加，不过这种和谐往往随着共处时间的叠加，彼此间的矛盾也会突显出来，直至最后甚至会达到一种水火不容的地步。本片的感觉恰好背道而驰，起初大家是相互排斥，勉强相处，后因旅途中的患难而愈走愈近，最终变得更加亲密无间。这是大团圆型编剧的惯用伎俩，不足为奇，只是那种蕴藏在你争我吵中的淡淡爱意更令人心驰神往，恐怕生活中也再没有比家庭更重要的单元了。不管怎么说，仅作为茶余饭后的消遣品来对待，那么也许会带来额外的惊喜。
剧情简介5口之家，1500英里，3天的行程，这就是约翰逊一家年度家庭聚会的全部安排。一家之主的内特·约翰逊(塞德瑞克饰)当然是责无旁贷的司机兼管家，车上其余成员分别是满腹牢骚的妻子桃乐西(温妮萨·威廉姆斯饰)，缺乏沟通而总幻想成为说唱歌手的儿子DJ(李奥宝娃饰)，有“洛丽塔”倾向的大女儿以及一直想“与狗同行”的小女儿。
一家人从加州出发，终点则锁定了中部的密苏里州。计划的身影通常总是在变化强行干涉中不得不改变着自己的步伐，这次编剧的思路也是如此。从所驾那辆豪华黑色林肯轿车“罢工”开始，约翰逊一家陷入了一场麻烦不断的怪圈当中。被人追赶复仇，被一个粗鲁的用餐者施暴，遇到修女伸手搭车佯装不知却被一个漂亮的搭便车女郎迷得神魂颠倒，甚至由于随手仍出车外的饮料瓶击中了后面摩托车警察而遭到拘捕……琐碎而妙趣横生。不过约翰逊一家的意志相当坚定，没有什么能够阻止他们前往密苏里州的决心，不过，首先得找出密苏里州到底在哪里才行！
