作为对本次缉捕事件的报复，凯利帮抢劫了两家银行。在新南威尔士的嘉利德瑞小镇，凯利帮劫持了60位村民。耐得口授了1封7000多字的长信，信中详细的记载了法律的不公、政府对他和所有爱尔兰天主教移民的迫害、以及他被迫落草为寇的经过。在信里他还提到要强迫富人把钱分给孤儿寡母和穷人，并坦言要向当局采取复仇行动。此信后被送交墨尔本当局，这使他成为尽人皆知的民间英雄。
1880年6月27日，凯利帮与50多名警察终于正面相对。凯利帮穿着由铁犁做成的铠甲与警察展开血战，但终究不敌，除耐得外，其余三人都被击毙。耐得被带回墨尔本审判，并被判处死刑。1880年11月11日，耐得被绞死，他的最后一句话是：“这就是一生。”(转自百度百科)
