游戏中地球总部于殖民星球两大势力为了争夺名为新马德里的殖民星球而引起了暴力冲突，地球总部派“第八小队（英文名：Section 8）”的菁英部队处理此事。游戏中的2个敌对游戏阵营分别是属于不同势力的“第八小队（英文名：Section 8）”与“猎户军团（英文名：Arm of Orion）”,游戏主角亚历克斯（英文名：Alex Corde）在不知道外星球势力命令“猎户军团（英文名：Arm of Orion）”进行战争准备的情况下进入外缘星球了解状况。游戏的最独特之处在于“空降再生（英文名：Burning in）”的游戏模式元素设计，游戏玩家将在游戏中在选取了自己的降落地点之后，立即由15000呎的高空降落再生。由于“空降再生（英文名：Burning in）”的即时性与游戏降落地点的任意性，游戏玩家可以在游戏中设计各种突发行动战略，游戏充满了不确定性。

《第八小队》（英文名：Section 8）游戏中以需求点数（英文名：Requisition Point）取代了游戏货币制度，游戏角色可以通过对占领区游戏地图上的区域搜索获得，可以使用需求点数（英文名：Requisition Point）换取游戏中的重型装甲套件（也就是帅气的机甲）或游戏只能过的重型移动武器堡垒四座坦克（坦克的各个位置可分别进行装备独特的游戏武器）等游戏物品。游戏玩家的军队可以再战斗中进行购买补给，不过游戏设计的一点是游戏玩家无法在进行战斗的一开始购得，是在游戏过程中逐步提供更广泛的物品种类，包括强大的机甲套件和自动射击防御炮塔等。
对于喜爱载具的《第八小队》（英文名：Section 8）游戏玩家，游戏特别设计了2种独特的载具，让双方阵营在目标完成之后仍可继续使用；若不愿使用载具，则可以选择装备喷射背包，再利用技能如同瞪羚般跳越地图。由于获得技能后随时可召唤炮塔和载具，因此一旦决定飞越过对手便得留意防空炮塔。
游戏中的士兵不受狙击手、突击兵或重型武器类型等限制，《第八小队》（英文名：Section 8）游戏玩家可以自由设定，并通过数个自订选项储存自己的设定类型。模组设定主要可分为主动和被动两种，主动自订有肩挂式迫击炮或飞行中可修复装甲套件的修复工具等物件，被动模组则包括可提升喷射背包速度和机动性的物品。
