这首歌的歌词作者罗伯森（B. A. Robertson），根据他自己与父亲之间因为观念不同而发生争执的感受，写出了第一段歌词。有一天，他在Mike & The Mechanics 团长路瑟福特（Mike Rutherford）家中一起写歌的时候，接到了父亲病逝的消息，对于自己没有来得及向父亲表达心中的爱与感激，十分的沉痛。不久之后，路瑟福特的父亲也过世了，同样有着许多感触，因此俩人合作，共同完成了这首歌曲。
