《XIII Century: Gold Edition》包含两部作品，《XIII Century: Death or Glory》及其续篇《XIII Century: Blood of Europe》。
虽然市场上的实时战略游戏多如过江之鲫，但能够同时兼具真实性、游戏性，以及出色画面的产品却是寥寥可数。《十三世纪》难能可贵的兼具这些优点，带领玩家回到 13 世纪的中古欧洲，扮演各国君王与封建贵族的角色，率领千军万马，亲身体验多场历史上的知名战役。
◆ 体验关键的历史战役
玩家可以在《十三世纪》的剧情模式中率领英国、法国、日耳曼，蒙古人，以及基辅罗斯（Kievan Rus，也就是俄国的前身）等五大阵营，参与超过 30 场以上的著名战役。扮演封建君主的角色，以强硬的军事手段解决欧洲各国贵族之间的冲突；甚或抵御大汗所率领的蒙古铁骑，以及苏丹王麾下的摩尔人。
游戏中根据详细的战史考据，设计了许多场足以改变欧洲历史的关键战役。譬如以英国的战役为例，特别收录了在 1298 年，由威廉瓦勒士（William Wallace，梅尔•吉勃逊自导自演的《英雄本色》中的主角）率领苏格兰人起义反抗暴政，和英格兰国王艾德华一世所展开的福尔柯克之役（Battle of Falkirk）。在这场战役之中，艾德华一世虽然有骑兵、步兵和弓兵协同作战的优势，但是苏格兰的长矛兵却占了躲藏在沼泽泥地里的地形优势。
而在 1213 年法国的米雷战役（Battle of Muret）中，玩家得扮演蒙特福德的西蒙爵士（Simon IV de Montfort），率领总数只有八百人左右的北法部队，利用地形的优势，大败南法亚拉冈国王彼得（King Peter of Aragon）麾下将近八千人的骑兵与步兵。
◆ 逼真的考据
游戏中各个阵营或国家的部队，也都经过了详实的考据，绝非只是含糊地分成几大类的兵种就蒙混过去。光是士兵们所使用的武器就超过了 15 种以上，而且全都是当时会实际出现在战场的武器。然后又可依装甲的种类、徒步还是骑马、远程还是近攻、作战经验与官阶的高低等等的条件，区分成许多种不同的作战单位。
根据每个阵营当时的文化特性和国力强度，各个阵营都有不一样的特殊部队与优势。例如法国的骑士是游戏中最强的骑兵部队，英国的韦尔斯弓箭兵在森林地区可获得额外的优势，意大利的弩兵射击准度最高；而蒙古人则几乎没有步兵，擅长以快速度的轻骑兵横扫沙场。
此外，在封建时期的中古欧洲，除了所属国家的旗帜之外，每个封建贵族也都有其独一无二的家徽和纹章。而这些徽章和纹饰，在游戏中也经过了详细的考据的。同样的兵种，不同国籍的士兵打扮就会不同。在游戏威力强大的图形引擎的帮助之下，更可以清楚的看见指挥官的旗帜，身上特殊的华丽盔甲和纹饰，骑士盾牌上的纹章，以及士兵套在身上的铠披。甚至光靠这些纹章和旗帜，就能正确地一眼辨识出这些部队的所属势力。
◆ 快速的开战节奏
《十三世纪》还有个和其它实时战略游戏截然不同的特点，就是它并没有所谓的「生兵」或「备战」阶段。不需要麻烦的资源管理，不需要冗长的基地建设，直接享受最纯粹的实时战争乐趣。只要一开战，玩家就能带着部队开始行动，规划最恰当的进军路线，或是全军出动，直接和敌方展开正面对决。
在战役剧情模式中，玩家所拥有的士兵数量和部队军种，将视该场战役历史上实际的兵力状况而定。而在自订战斗或是联机游戏中，则是透过自行设定的军费预算，先行雇用好参战的部队，然后再一起上阵开战。
◆ 磅礡而细腻的画面
新一代的成像引擎，兼具大而壮观，以及小而精细的双重威力。游戏的视角可以自由移动，当玩家拉远视角的镜头时，就能总揽全局，调动部队，并且观赏千军万马在平原或山谷之间奔驰而过的快感与气势。
而将鼠标滚轮向前推到底，就能放大画面，直到「贴身」的近距离，清楚看到每一个士兵的不同模样，甚至连地上的每一株草都在随风摇摆。精致的贴图材质，能清楚的呈现士兵身上不同种类之护甲的质感以及脸上的表情，连贵族骑士头盔上的夸张羽饰都能够看得一清二楚。士兵交战的动作生动丰富，彷佛是在观赏电影一样。
◆ 庞大的规模，丰富的变化
《十三世纪》精彩刺激的战斗，让玩家能够真实地掌握千军万马，而非寥寥可数的几个「象征性」的作战单位而已。每个一兵一卒都会真实的呈现在画面上，战场上的敌我双方动辄上千人，甚至有近万兵马同时参战。让玩家真正体会到「数大就是美」的压倒性气势，以及何谓「人多势众」的全新震撼。
但是要获得胜利，光靠士兵的数量是绝对不够的。玩家还得密切注意各兵种的之间的长处与弱点、部队队形的变化、阵形的组合、士气的高低，以及各种地形的变化等等。兵种之间并无绝对的优势，所以一队士气高昂的低阶步兵，也有可能击败疲惫气馁的菁英骑兵；若是背后和侧翼同时遭到夹击，再坚强的部队也会瞬间面临士气崩溃的危机。
游戏总共使用了超过 80 种的参数来运算士兵的战斗表现，所以任何层面的疏失都可能会影响到部队的战力，大幅提高了游戏的真实性，以及战术运用的丰富程度。
《十三世纪》融合了简易好上手的操作，以及丰富而具有深度的战术变化，再加上恢弘的场景与精致的画面，带领玩家亲身感受中古时代的战场魄力。不论对于历史题材是否熟悉，凡是热爱战争游戏的玩家，都不容轻言错过。
