游戏的时空背景设定在《星球大战》前三部曲与后三部曲之间。身为皇帝左右手的达斯维德，在某次猎杀残存杰迪武士的任务中，意外遇到一名未经雕琢就能以原力将光剑从他手上夺走的男孩。看上男孩无穷潜力的达斯维德，于是秘密将男孩收为学徒。
在历经多年调教之后，玩家所扮演的神秘门徒将奉师尊之命，执行生涯首场任务，运用高超的光剑剑术与连黑武士都刮目相看的强大原力，猎杀残存的杰迪大师。由于任务要求彻底保密，因此主角必须杀死所有目击他行动的人，甚至连帝国士兵也不例外。
《星球大战：原力释放》中主角具有3种能力，第一是使用着星战迷们熟悉的激光剑与敌人“近身搏斗”，依靠着多种不同的键位组合可以使出很多招式，在动作的设计上真实感很强，只是不能像《鬼泣》《忍者龙剑传》那样华丽，这里就体现出了剧本限制的劣势，主角的能力不能由制作方随意去设计，必须符合电影中的实际情况。第二种能力是“雷电”，主角可以发出强力的雷电，用这招来对付敌人不光能够耗费其体力值，还可以让其无法动弹，是非常有用一项能力。第三种能力则是本作中所要诠释的重点“原力”这项能力极为强大，玩家能够随便将旁边的什么物体用原力将其浮在半空中然后再抛向敌人，还可以直接将敌人浮在半空中然后重重的抛向地面或扔到很远处，更能够像冲击波一样蓄力到一定程度将其双手推出，原力会把敌人冲击到墙上从而受到物理重击。本作只所以制作的比较成功就是因为这三项能力如果组合在一起将能够变化成各种各样的花哨招式，比如先用“原力”将敌人浮在半空中，然后再用雷电打击敌人，使其浑身带电，再将其摔倒地上或把手中的激光剑飞刺到他身上。诸如这样的招式组合完全可以根据玩家的想象来进行，这一优秀的设定使得游戏整体节奏流畅，达到了ACT游戏的所应具备的优点。此外这三项招式都可以通过反复击杀敌人获得经验后来进行强化升级，既可以学到新招式又可以将原有的招式威力增强，还有，玩家手中的激光剑也能够更换，不光是更换剑本身，还能够更换自己喜欢的颜色，这些设计一定会让星战迷们得到很大的满足。最好要说的是《星球大战：原力释放》居然还加入了QTE的设定，就是提示按键，在与一些个头较大的敌人或BOSS对战时，将敌人用普通攻击打到快没体力，然后屏幕上就会有按键提示，此时玩家只要依照提示在短时间内正确输入就可以看到电影版的武打动作，很是过瘾。
