BBC and ITV fight for Royal Variety Performance
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009
royal-varietyThe Royal Variety Performance is at the centre of a row between the BBC and ITV.
For nearly 50 years the two broadcasters have shared the rights to the performance, which showcases British talent, by alternating coverage. However, according to a report in the Daily Star, the BBC is hoping to take full control of coverage as ITV continues to struggle to raise funds.
A BBC insider told the paper: “The feeling is we can make a serious play to take the Royal Variety Show off ITV’s hands permanently. They are clearly struggling financially, so it makes sense.”
Last week ITV announced that it would slash its programming budget by a further £20 million. By 2011 the broadcaster homes to have reduced its £1 billion spending pot to £750 million. The troubled broadcaster is also considering a further round of job cuts, on top of the 1,600 posts it has axed in the last 12 months.
If the BBC takes exclusive rights to the show, it will mark the end of a broadcasting partnership that began in 1962, two years after the Royal Variety Performance first came onto television screens.
Last year’s performance at the London Palladium, which featured stars including Take That, Duffy and Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson, pulled in around 7.5 million viewers on its BBC1 broadcast. This year the baton will be passed over to ITV.
