Monica全名Monica Arnold，1980年10月24日出生于美国佐治亚州的亚特兰大。身为教堂唱诗班成员的母亲给了Monica一副好嗓音，2岁的时候她就开始到唱诗班帮忙，9岁的时候她被Whitney Houston的歌曲所吸引，并开始在公共场合演唱，后来她成为了唱诗班中最小的演员，但却是最重要的成员之一，而她的天才也被星探所发现。12岁时 Rowdy Records唱片公司被她的天才所吸引，并为她筹划制作第一张个人专辑。
当单曲《Don’t Take It Personal (just one of dem days)》成为Billboard R&B单曲榜冠军并创下了白金记录的时候，她才刚刚度过了自己14岁的生日。之后，她的第二支单曲《Before You Walk Out Of My Life》就接替了《Don’t Take It Personal (just one of dem days)》继续在Billboard R&B单曲榜领跑，并在不久以后同样成为了白金单曲。连续的两首单曲成为冠军，并且演唱者只有14岁，这简直就是一个童话般的故事！能够与这一纪录相提并论的只有当年13岁就成为冠军单曲拥有者的Stevie Wonder
Monica十五岁生日的时候，发行了她的第一张专辑《Miss Thang》并创下白金销量，在她的巡回演唱会中甚至还需要监护人以及家庭教师的陪同。1997年6月13日星期五，Monica从Atlanta Country Day学校毕业，而她的巡回演出也因此宣告结束。1998年发行了第二张专辑《The Boy Is Mine》，其中与另一名女歌手Brandy合唱的同名主打歌《The Boy Is Mine》获得了第41届葛莱美最佳R&B组合奖，那时她刚满18岁。
