据国际攀联透露，2009世界运动会攀岩赛事参赛运动员数量将增至48人。难度和速度男子及女子每个单项参赛人数为12人。而2005年在德国举行的世界运动会，攀岩运动员的总参赛人数仅为32人，即每个单项为8人。
为确保最优秀的运动员都能入围这12个名额，并具有全球代表性，为此，国际攀联管理委员会决定将按照下列竞赛成绩选拔运动员：

如果世界锦标赛冠军（名额1），同时获得名额2-12的冠军，则原来未获得资格的世界锦标赛亚军，将获入围资格
如果2008年度世界杯冠军（名额2），同时获得名额3-12的冠军，则原来未获得资格的2008年度世界杯亚军，将获入围资格
如遇其他特殊情况，国际攀联执委会将有权决定入围资格

IFSC announces World Games ‘09 Qualification Process
Most of the 48 spaces available, 12 per category, will be known over the course of 2008.
The WG passport for sport climbing is 48 participants total, that is 12 per category for the Lead and Speed WG disciplines. This is an increase from 8 (32 participants total) in 2005 - a big improvement for our sport!
To fill the 12 spaces and ensure both the best athletes are present as well as ensuring a global presence, the IFSC Management Committee has approved the following criteria:
