The work starts with a resounding splash of color in the percussion over which the woodwinds play an upward flourish leading to a resplendent fanfare in the brass. This idea is repeated with slight changes of color until it leads to a typical Malcolm Arnold "big tune." These two ideas are then interchanged and after a long pedal F we are given a full and rich final statement of the tune.
