Polymer thin films are critical in many technological and industrial applications, such as electronic packaging materials, dielectric coatings, resist layers for lithography, sensor films, adhesion and lubrication. The conflicting goals of reducing film thickness while improving film properties, e.g. uniformity, stability and adhesion to surfaces, require a quantitative insight into the factors that govern the structure and properties of thin films. This is increasingly important, since empirical approaches can be very time-consuming and therefore costly. For this reason new developments in the field of polymer surfaces, interfaces and thin films, and concurrent advances in the material science of thin film coatings, are important for developing new materials, especially as an increasing focus is being placed on creating multilayer coatings with well-defined and controlled nanostructures.
Since there are other books that provide overviews of classical ideas concerning thermodynamic and kinetic aspects related to this area, we have focused on emerging ideas in polymer surface and interface science. Thus, by design, the book considers only recent highlight contributions in theory, simulations and experiments. Consequently, it is aimed at advanced engineers and scientists who have a basic background in polymer and surface and interface science, and is primarily intended as an overview of current research topics on surfaces and interfaces.
The research topics covered in the book include understanding the mobility of polymers near surfaces and interfaces, the effects of confinement on block copolymers, tailoring polymer interfacial properties by chain end-group chemistry control, glass transition of polymer films, composition profiling of thin films of binary polymer blends and relating the information to segmental interaction parameters, dielectric response of mica confined polymer thin films, and polymer adsorption at polymer-solid interfaces. References given at the end of each chapter provide a fairly comprehensive review of the current literature.
Finally, a word of gratitude to the authors of this volume, who have borne our constant cajoling and wailing with fortitude. This book would not have the same flavor if any of them had not contributed!
