Kindergarten-Grade 3–At her younger brother's request, Pinky Dinky Doo cranks up her imagination and makes up a story about herself for his enjoyment. When she can't find her shoes, she opts to go to school wearing her baloney and string bean lunch on her feet. Once there, she discovers the situation is epidemic, with teachers and students alike sporting footwear made from foods that range from meatloaf and roasted chicken to melons and spaghetti. The mix-up threatens to ruin lunch, as delicacies such as "Slipper Salad" and "Frozen Flip-Flops" are on the cafeteria menu. Pinky decides it's time to "Think Big" and after her brain expands enough to fill the room and eventually pops, she comes up with a solution. (Literal-minded kids might wonder how everyone's shoes ended up in the cafeteria.) The format and writing style invite interaction from readers. Occasional multiple-choice questions (with one logical answer and two silly suggestions) are smoothly incorporated into the text, which also includes humorous references (e.g., "Principal Dipthong"). The whimsical illustrations utilize cartoons superimposed on photographs and perfectly match the book's ridiculous tone. Silly fare for newly independent readers.–Phyllis M.
