The only female child of wealthy, protective parents, Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) spent lonely childhood hours sketching pets and natu-ral specimens gathered during family summers in Scotland and England's Lake District. As an adult, Potter combined her perceptive render-ings of wild creatures with amusing original narratives created to entertain young acquain-tances; originally written as letters, these later served as the basis for many of her story-books, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit, first commercially published in 1902.
The success of Peter Rabbit inspired Potter, still ensconced in the stifling environment of her parents' London home, to continue her writing career, and over the next decade she produced an astonishing number of children's stories which are today considered classics of the genre, including the tales reproduced in this collection.
This volume collects the unabridged texts of 12 of Potter's best-known works. For this edi- tion, many of Potter's original illustrations havebeen adapted into black-and-white line format.
