作者简介:Joan M. Walker quali-fied as a physiotherapist from the New Zealand
School of Physiotherapy in Dunedin, New Zealand. Over the years,
she also completed a Teacher's Diploma of Physiotherapy from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, England; a Bachelor of Physical
Therapy and Master of Arts (Physical Anthro-pology) from The University of Manitoba, Canada;and a Doctor of Philosophy (Medical Sciences, Growthand Development) from McMaster University, Canada. She has taught on the faculties of the Universities of Toronto, Manitoba, McMaster, Canada; Witwatersrand, South Africa; and Southern California, United States. A former Director at the Dalhousie University School of Physiotherapy, she currently holds the position of Emeritus Professor.
Dr. Walker focused her extensive research onexercise and aging, influences on cartilage and otherjoint tissues, and lately on post-poliomyelitis. She has written more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, presented more than 50 invited papers and courses, and delivered more than 35 conference presentations.In addition to writing and lecturing, she has served on numerous editorial committees and continues to review for a number of professional journals. Dr. Walker has received the prestigious Mildred Elson Award from the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (1999), the Enid Graham Memorial Lecture Award from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (2002), The Helen Hislop Award, The Marion Williams Award from the American Physical Therapy Association (1994), and an Honorary Fellowship from the New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists (2003).
With Antoine Helewa she authored the textbook,Critical Evaluation oJ Research in Physical Rehabili-tation: Towards Evidence-Based Practice (2000).
