作者简介:
Jan C Wilschut,PhD is Professor of Molecular Virology in the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University Medical Centre, Groningen, The Netherlands. His main research interests include the cell entry mechanisms of enveloped viruses, influenza virus and alpha- and flaviviruses in particular, and viral and tumour vaccine development. Based on his interest in viral membrane fusion processes, he developed the virosome system as a basis for novel vaccine modalities. He is Co-ordinator of the Netherlands Influenza Vaccine Research Centre (NIVAREC) and has published over 150 papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
内容简介
The ongoing threat of pandemic influenza is very serious indeed as evidenced by recent articles within The Lancet and The Lancet Infectious Disease. This title provides the reader with authoritative and accessible information on the subject of influenza. Clearly written by key experts in the field and highly illustrated in full colour, the book provides an overview of influenza, its pathogenesis, epidemiology, the burden of disease and its health economics. Rapid Reference Influenza also summarises available information on the molecular biology of influenza and the emergence of new influenza viruses. Completely updated with the latest information on H5N1, the book aims to contribute to international efforts to emphasize the major burden of influenza and the need for better control.
Expert information succinctly written for ease of use.
Abundant use of bulleted lists and short tables, for quick access to comparative information.
Presents evidence-based sources for practice when available, either through research or best-practice guidelines.
Completely up-to-date in light of the H5N1 emergence and spread.
Useful addresses and websites appendix provide additional resources for the physician.
Updated epidemiology regarding H5N1.
Revised discussion about the relevance of the potential impact of H5N1.
Latest statistics from the World Health Organization.
Upda te on 'pandemic preparedness' and related issues including new vaccine development.
Includes an overview of current 'global thinking' about the possible pandemic including reports from the recent meeting between the WHO and the World Bank.
