作者介绍：Gerald L. Alexanderson
After graduate school at Stanford University, Gerald L. Alexanderson joined the faculty at Santa Clara University where he is now in the 50th year of teaching. He holds the Valeriote Professorship in Science. He has a long history of service in the Mathematical Association of America serving as Editor of Mathematics Magazine from 1986 to 1990, later as Secretary and finally as President 1997-1999. He is the auhor of numerous books and journals articles in mathematics.

Who would expect to find in the pages of Mathematics Magazine the first full treatment of one of the more important and oft-cited twentieth century theorems in analysis, the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem in an article by Marshall Stone himself?
