Fabian and Hondo, the cat and dog introduced in the eponymous Caldecott Honor Book (2002), spend their days in species-appropriate pursuits. But in this book, as Hondo takes a nap, Fabian jumps out the window and finds adventure. In a classic picture, Fabian meets three dogs, and for a moment there's a standoff. Children can almost see the canines quivering; then the chase is on. Meanwhile, poor Hondo is decked out in a clown collar, courtesy of his young owner. As in the previous book, there are delicious differences in Fabian's and Hondo's day. These are highlighted by the simply worded text juxtaposed against the humor in the pictures, which is often conveyed by almost imperceptible changes in the animals' expressions. McCarty uses colored pencils to create artwork so velvety that kids will want to reach out and touch the pets.
