4. Reference Version:Two of my postdoc friends met trouble in Holland because they could not use Eng-lish for daily communication. This leads me to consider two problems in English teach-ing in China. First, traditional philosophical beliefs in education make students regardteachers as the main source of input. When learning English, they prefer to followteachers and books instead of working on their own initiative and among themselves.Besides, students prefer teachers who spoon-feed to those who adopt communicative ac-tivities. They cannot see the value of these teachers' creativity, and even proceed to la-bel them as lazy or irresponsible. The other problem lies with teachers themselves. Al-though more and more native speakers are coming to teach English, they are mainly en-gaged in training teachers or technical personnel. Most of the teaching activities arestill carried out by teachers who have received traditional training and have almost nev-er used English for real-life communication. Without proper training and experience, they can only teach English in the outdated ways in which they were taught.
