People in different parts of the world have different birthday traditions. In the United States, people often celebrate a birthday at a party. They give presents and serve cake and ice cream. But in Korea people celebrate by eating seaweed soup and rice cakes. Koreans serve seaweed soup, because it is healthful, and special rice cakes decorated with nuts and dried fruit. Traditional dress, called hanbok, may be worn. The jacket is made like a blouse with long sleeves. Women wear skirts, and men wear baggy pants.
In China people eat "longevity noodles" on their birthdays. These long noodles sym- bolize long life. Children do not have birthday parties because parents do not want the gods to notice them until they are grown up. On a child's birthday, special foods may be served that include an egg dish. The child is urged to eat the yolk. In Chinese, the word for" yolk" sounds the same as the word for "emperor. " Eating the yolk reminds children that the adults guide them. Parents give their children money in a red envelope for luck. Adults have birth- day parties, and the sixtieth birthday is a big celebration.
Children in Mexico have birthday parties with family and friends. A hollow figure in the shape of an animal, flower, or favorite thing is filled with candy and prizes. It is called a pinata, and it is hung from the ceding. The children, who are blindfolded (蒙住眼睛的), take turns striking the pifiata with a stick. The child who breaks it will have good luck. When the pifiata breaks, everyone grabs the treasures that fall out.
A kinderfest is a child's birthday party in Germany. Historians think the Germans were the first to have birthday parties for children. A wooden birthday wreath with candles on it is placed on the table. A tall candle in the middle, the "life" candle, is lit every year until a child becomes 12 years old. The food is homemade by the mother, who cooks all day to prepare for this event.
A child at a birthday party in Canada may f
