序言The International Symposium on Geoenvironmental Engineering (ISGE 2009) was held onSeptember 8-10, 2009 in Hangzhou, China. ISGE 2009 was organized by MOE Key Laboratory ofSoft Soils and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Zhejiang University, Chinese Institution of SoilMechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CISMGE), and Chinese Chapter of InternationalGeosynthetics Society (CCIGS), under the auspices of ISSMGE TC5, sponsored by K. C. WongEducation Foundation, and National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as ZhejiangUniversity Zeng Guo-Xi Lecture Fund.
Issues associated with Environmental Geotechnics continue to be a major preoccupation forgovernments, public and private organizations and the general community worldwide. The ChineseGovernment has been putting great effort on environmental issues including sanitary disposal ofsolid waste, reuse of industrial wastes, remediation of contaminated land, prevention ofgroundwater contamination, environmental risk assessment, ecological techniques, etc. China alsohas much to share on the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities for environmentalgeotechnics with other countries, especially the developing countries.
Under the conference theme, "Reclamation of the Past and Toward a SustainableGeoenvironment", 168 abstracts in total were received and 125 papers in total were reviewed andaccepted for publication in this proceeding. This proceeding encloses 2 Zeng Guo-Xi Lectures, 26Invited Lectures and 97 papers. The topics covered include basic and advanced theories formodeling of geoenvironmental phenomena, testing and monitoring for geoenvironmentalengineering, municipal solid wastes and landfill engineering, sludge and dredged soils, geotechnicalreuse of industrial wastes, contaminated land and remediation technology, applications ofgeosynthetics in geoenvironmental engineering, geoenvironmental risk assessment, managementand sustainability, ecological techniques and case histories. This proceedings include papersauthored by core members of ISSMGE TC5 (International Society of Soil Mechanics andGeotechnical Engineering - Environmental Geotechnics) and geoenvironmental researchers frommore than 23 countries and regions(i.e., Albania, Austria, Bengalese, Brazil, Canada, China,France, German, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Portugal,Russia, Taiwan, UK, USA, Uzbekistan, Vietnam).

Despite reductions in waste generation, landfills willcontinue to be required for the safe disposal of municipalsolid waste (MSW) for the foreseeable future. Theselandfills will generate both leachate and gas whoseescapefromthefacilitymustbecontrolledtoenvironmentally acceptable levels. The leachate ispredominantly water but typically contains dissolvedorganic and inorganic chemicals and suspended solids(e.g. microbes, particulate matter etc.) whose escapefrom the landfill must be controlled to negligible levels.Landfill gas is predominantly comprised of methane andcarbon dioxide which are of concern as greenhouse gases(especially methane) but it also contains trace amountsof volatile organic compounds. From an engineeringperspective, the long-term performance of the modemMSW landfill will be governed by the performance of asystem comprised of three primary subsystems: thebarrier system below the waste, the landfill operations, and the landfill cover and gas collection system. Toprovide long-term environmental protection, this systemmust contain contaminants for what is called thecontaminating lifespan of the landfill (i.e. the period oftime during which the landfill will produce contaminantsat levels that could have unacceptable impacts if theywere discharged into the surrounding environment). Forlarge modem landfills this could be hundreds of years(Rowe et al. 2005).
The release of contaminants contained in landfillleachate can be reduced to environmentally acceptablelevels with a suitable barrier system below the waste thatincludes a leachate collection system and a liner system. The leachate collection system minimizes the drivingforce for leachate escape (i.e. the leachate head acting onthe underlyingliner).Theliner system providesresistance to the migration of contaminants both by thepressuredrivenmovementof leachatecontainingcontaminants (often referred to as leakage or advection)a
