1997年退役进入清华大学，2001年拿下学士学位，同年9月进入英国诺丁汉大学，2002年12月12日，获硕士学位，同年进入英国剑桥大学经济学专业攻读博士学位。邓亚萍用求学路上一路奋斗的故事讲述了一个世界冠军求学的悬梁岁月……
“临近退役时，我便开始设计自己将来的路，有人认为运动员只能在自己熟悉的运动项目中继续工作，而我就是要证明：运动员不仅能够打好比赛，同时也能做好其他事情。哪天我不当运动员了，我的新起点也就开始了。”邓亚萍说。
“1996年底，我被萨老提名为国际奥委会运动委员会委员。我明白，这既是国际奥委会的重用和信任，也是一次严峻的挑战。奥委会的办公语言是英语和法语。然而，这时我的英语基础几乎是零，法语也是一窍不通。面对如此重要的工作岗位和自己外语水平的反差，我心里急得火上房。”
开始的一两个月之内，根本听不懂老师在上面讲什么，我把老师所有写在黑板上的东西照抄一遍。回到家里以后，自己再翻字典，再看。每天的生活比较单调，上课时间是四个半小时。下了课还有很多作业，吃饭对我来说好像都很费事，中午休息的时间只有一个小时，我一般都不回宿舍，就是吃上午带去的三明治，然后看一会儿书。晚上经常吃的东西就是自己做的方便面。几乎每天都要学习到12点才能睡觉
一年后，邓亚萍面对严格的考官，用英语宣读了3万5千字的论文,临场考官的一致结论是：无条件一次通过！2002年12月22日，她如愿获得硕士学位。萨马兰奇先生称赞她“拥有了打开世界大门的钥匙”。

"Late in 1996 ,I was nominated as a member of International Olympic Committee by Sa,I realized it is the trust of IOC as well as a tough challenge. the official languages of IOC are english and french,but in that time my english level was at zero and I kown nothing about french.Facing the large gap between the competence and my actual ability ,my heart almost took fire ."
During the first two months ,I could not catch what the teacher was saying, so I writed down all the things on blackboard and look up the dictionary to get their meaning.
Everyday's life was simple, the school time was four and a half hour. There are many excersises after class, it seemed to be a inconvenience to have dinner. The rest at noon lasted only an hour ,I usually did some reading instead of returning the dormitary.Morning's sandwich was enough for me. The customary supper was instant pasta cooked by myself. I didn't go to bed until 12 o'clock."
One year later,facing the strict evaluator,Yaping Deng read out her paper which contained 35000 words. The evaluation crew were unanimous in the pass of her paper!
On Sep 22th 2002,she took her master degree as she wish.Mr Sa praised her "she has the key to open the door of the world."
