人口增长过快可能给资源和环境造成巨大的压力，但决不能说造成环境污染的主要原因是人口数量增长，也就是说人口增长不是环境污染的惟一决定因素，因为环境污染是由于经济发展过程中，不重视保护生态环境等多方面原因造成的，人口数量增长只是其中之一。但也不能忽视人口数量增长对环境恶化的各种直接或间接的影响。
