My Korean friend
My Korean friend was more or less a good English speaker when he first came to the United States.Sometimes he might goof up and use a word that did not mean exactly what he thought it meant.
He also had a lot of trouble with idioms. But,other than that,he had his English well in hand for getting around in his daily life.
One day,my friend asked me to help him buy a necklacefor his wife. I had never seen his wife.I asked if he had a picture of her on hand. When I saw her picture,I said,"Your wife is a real spring chicken.”
My friend looked confused. He asked me,"Why do you think my wife is a chicken?”I told him that a spring chicken means a beautiful young girl.
We went shopping for a necklace that afternoon. We stepped into a small jewelry store and found one necklace that I thought was a steal. My friend bought it.
My friend told the salesperson,"This necklace is for my wife in Korean.”
"Really?”the salesperson said."Yes,”my friend said.He took out his wife's picture and showed it to the salesperson. He asked the salesperson,"Isn't my wife a chicken noodle?”
I guess we only learn if we screw up from time to time.
