剧情介绍记者贝茜·布鲁姆到监狱采访死刑犯大卫·戈尔。大卫是位受人尊敬的大学哲学教授，也是一名死刑的坚决反对者，但却因被控谋杀面临死刑。贝茜采访过程中对法庭的审判产生质疑，她决定亲自调查事情真相还大卫清白。原来，大卫的一名女学生爱上了大卫，企图和他发生关系，但遭到拒绝。为此，女学生以强奸罪名起诉大卫。大卫虽然没有因此进监狱，但名誉尽毁，妻儿都离开了他。大卫终日酗酒。不久，朋友康丝坦斯·哈拉维遭人谋杀。种种证据对大卫极其不利，大卫被判谋杀判处死刑。贝茜历经千辛万苦终于查出了令人震惊的真相。
