序言In the course of thousands of years of history,China has created a splendid ancient culture, which eventually became the spiritual mainstay for the continuous growth and development ofthe Chinese nation.Education, whether formal。domestic or social, underpinned the progress of ancient Chinese culture.both materialand spiritual.
Whereas in Western countries.religion was the vehicle of culture and learning in ancient times,in China this role was played byeducation.Realizing the importance of education.t11e ancestors ofthe Chinese began to conduct organized education as early as fouror five thousand years ag0.According to tIle historical record inShang Shu,in the time of King Yun,a special government officewas established to be in charge of educational affairs. For instance.an official named Qi was assigned to the post of“Situ’’to take careof inculcating the five moral qualities among the people,i.e.,teaching fathers to be fair and iust, mothers to be kind, elder brothers to be considerate, younger brothers to be respectful and sons tobe filial;and another person named Kui was assigned to the post of“Dianyue”(manager of music),responsible for teaching music andpoetry to the people.Owing to the fine tradition of giving emphasisto education, the splendid ancient culture of China has been able tosurvive four or five thousand years and remains vigorous up untilnow. Moreover, its contents are richer and more unique comparedwith those of other ancient cultures in the world.
文摘Since the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty(1 40—87 BC).Confucianism were considered to be useful to the rulers.and Con—fucius was held in high esteem. His position in China’S history of education is similar to that of Socrates in ancient Greece.
When Confucius reached three.his father died and the living conditions of his family went from bad to worse. He did not even know where his father was buried. To support his widowed mother and to make a living for himself,he had to do various odd iobs,as he said about himself,“1 was poor when 1 was young.”(The Ana.1ects.“Zihan”)
Reaching adulthood,Confucius once served as a warehouse man called“weili”and a pettV Omcial in charge of sheep and cattle, called“chengtian.”Mencius said.“Confucius was once a petty 0mcial as warehouseman. He said,‘My job is iust tO see that thefigures are right.’He was also once a petty official in charge of cattle and sheep. He said,‘Mv iob is just to see that the cattle and sheep grow healthy and strong’.”(Mencius,“Wang Zhang,II”) At the age of 30,he took up teaching, taking only a couple of students at the beginning. In spite of the small number.it was something new.Among hiS early students some turned out to befamous figures and they included Yan Lu,Zeng Dian,Zilu,Ran You and Zigong. The school buildings where he lectured werelocated to the north of the present—day Qufu。When he traveled.he was accompanied by his pupils.Gradually he gained fame and more and more people came to seek his advice.Eventually, his influence grew steadily in the State of Lu.Meng Xizi,an aristocrat of me State of LU.even made a deathbed will that his son should follow Confucius as his pupil.
